Nicki Minaj Kills The Duplicate Content Myth

Not intentionally, of course.

Right now, if you type nicki minaj is toxic into google, the exact same article appears for the first eighteen spots.

And the twentieth spot, actually.

Why?

Because it's syndicated content, which is fine. The search results will probably shift around a bit in the future, but that particular search phrase will appear for a long time. Yes, lots of people will tell you that only the first thing posted will rank. Don't you believe it.

(I kind of expect this post to appear in the search results. Recursion!)

You could show this to a million people and half of them still wouldn't believe you. The myth is actually just a misunderstanding between on site and off site content.

Well, that's still a half a million to the good, eh?

To further explain, for the benefit of people who don't understand why this is a myth: The duplicate content penalty, such as it is, is what happens when you have lots of the same content on the same site. You can't own the first page of Google by having the same piece of content in ten thousand places on, say, Index of /.

If, on the other hand, your article about how awesome I am gets syndicated a bunch of other sites, you can have the same content inhabiting the front page. You shouldn't count on this happening, for lots of reasons, but at the same time you shouldn't worry about posting the same content in more than one place.

It would be interesting to know what programs like adsense think about duplicate content. Would they slam the ban hammer for it?

I've never done Adsense, so I can't say for certain.

I'm fairly sure the answer is no - article directories are built around the concept of syndicated content, and they almost always use Adsense to monetize. Ezinearticles, for instance, is fine with you using articles from your own sites, and using their articles on sites, so it doesn't appear to be an issue.

Ummm... yeah, this. Was posting mine while you posted this. Almost a case of "duplicate content" it seems.

Adsense runs on 90% of the article directories out, EZA being the biggest. Article directories are in the business of providing duplicate content to webmasters by virtue of offering free articles to populate blogs and sites. It's part of their business model after all.

So, no, adsense definitely does not have a problem with duplicate content. They earn heaps from it.

Btw Justin, thanks for posting this, hopefully this thread will discourage the usual knuckleheads from plying their fantastical NON advice on the matter. For today at least.

Are you saying that the same exact content has been duplicated verbatim and Google has it listed for their 1st 18 search results , for Nikki Minaj ?

The specific search phrase is "Nicki Minaj is toxic". She wore something to her birthday party that Britney, apparently, wore in video for the song Toxic. If you search for that, you get the same article, which starts with "Here's rap diva Nicki Minaj at her 26th birthday party in Vegas Thursday night..."

Same stuff, syndicated to umpteen number of sites. It's actually interesting to see what sites are ranking with that, because they aren't necessarily on topic.
