Making Wordpress Blog More Community

Does anyone have any tips or tricks on how to make a wordpress blog more social? Sure I know about ning sites or buddy press but I don't want to have to intergrate another theme into my site or dedicate the time to build another site like ning would require. I really just want to increase the community feeling on my site.

For example, if you take a look at this Men's Health site you'll see that people can upload their pictures for a workout challenge.

The Science of Fat Loss: Spartacus Challenge

Something like that would be cool.

    If you are not already aware, there are some great wordpress plugins such as Sociable, that add social bookmarking buttons to each post

    Something like that would be cool.
    Community doesn't just happen because of the structure of the site. Community is something that you have to cultivate over time. I would encourage interaction by inciting comments with provocative content, allow for threaded comments so your visits can interact with one another as well as you. Take the time to respond to every comment you receive... people will be more likely to take the time to comment if they see you have a tendency to respond.

    You can also post polls and other quick things like that are designed to encourage people to get involved.
