My first FOUR AMAZON affiliate SALES - in ONE DAY

This is really weird.

I've been promoting a site selling a particular set of items on Amazon.

Yesterday, I had four affiliate sales come through, BUT they we're nothing to do with the products I was promoting.

Also, although they have come through on the 'orders summary', they haven't come through on the 'commission summary'.

Is this because the sales only went through yesterday? Or is this because I wasn't promoting the products?

Please help.

While I'm not an expert on Amazon Affiliation network, my suspicion is that maybe they landed on amazon's website through your affiliate link and made a sale on a different product other than the one you were actually promoting.

Yes I'd agree with that. I've heard that happens often. You should still get the commission though I would think

So, they ship first and then give you the commission?

Congratulations. You're now officially an active Amazon affiliate.

Your sales won't show up under the Earnings/Commissions Summary until the items have been dispatched, and the reports have been updated for that day.

      Pretty awesome isn't it.

Your visitors went through your link, but bought something else instead. You still get the credit because you sent them there, and just have to wait for things to verify.

Amazon is awesome at recommending people to buy more/other products than what they went there for in the first place. Good news for us. I have to watch myself there sometimes because I tend to add a lot of things to my cart before I even realize it. haha

As others have said, they'll credit you with the commission as soon as the items ship. It's their standard practice. FYI - I sell lots of stuff totally unrelated to what I'm promoting every month. I'm sure that happens to other Amazon associates as well. It's just part of the game. Congrats on your first sales.

Congratulations on your first Amazon sale in what should be the first of many. I remember my first sale in July 2010 with the company for a huge £2.70 & earned 14p in commission. I promote mobile phones, games consoles and gadgets and my first sale was an audio cd!

      Hey Danny!

In my experience, a shorter cookie life is better than a longer one. For example, Awebber offers a lifetime cookie, the thing is, if somebody clicks your link and subscribes, but before that, they had clicked somebody else s link, then you don't get commision even thjough you were the last person to refer that person and it was your content that sold them.

Absolutely nothing surprising in case of Amazon. That's how the sales happen there - you promote a monkey and sell a donkey instead. That's what has happened to me all the time. But its still good - much better than people going on Amazon and buying nothing. Amazon coverts like crazy if you know how to "milk the mind" of your visitor in the presell phase.

Sign up for an Amazon Associates account. Find a product you want to promote on Amazon that's over $100 and begin promoting by building mini sites and blogs. The reason why you want to promote products over $100 is because the commissions will be bigger. Hope this helps...

You've just illustrated how wonderful cookies are. What probably happened is that someone landed on Amazon via your product affiliate link, had no interest in what you were promoting, but got intrigued by something else on there which they then proceeded to buy (and which you got credit for because of the cookie deposited on their computer).

Happens all the time and is one of the benefits of Amazon Associates - you get paid for things people buy while you still have your cookie on their comp - I've had all kinds of really crazy stuff being bought through my links that are completely unrelated; I say, don't worry because you're earning that affiliate cash

Yeah Amazon is weird, I earned a big commission on a grill the other day and don't promote grills at all. It seems like all you really need to do (in my experience anyways) is just figure out a way to get a bunch of traffic through your affiliate links and Amazon takes care of the rest. It's such a weird beast compared to many other affiliate programs out there.

      Congrats on your first sales!

I just made my first sales as well on Monday when the light bulb went off. Actually it was 24 of them, then another 30 on Tuesday, 14 on Wednesday, and 31 yesterday.

I'm kind of mad about the whole deal when I realized how much I've missed out on over the last 3 years. The sales I made were averaging 1200 people a day passing through. I've had 1.6 MILLION people that wanted to buy pass through before I realized how to make some money off it. %$%!$@^!!!!!!

Thumbs up on your first sale. I think Amazon is one of the best affiliate programs around, even if the cookies only last a day. Their reports are usually a day or two behind and you only see your profits after the products have been shipped.

If you know how to get your niche sites to the first page of Google and write copy (good product descriptions with call to action) that convert you can do very well. I make sales every day from a few niche sites, specially for products I'm not even promoting. Clickbank on the other hand ain't doing much for me lately. My focus right now is on product related sites.

That's the beauty of being an Amazon Associate actually...

People gripe about its low commission rate constantly but fails to understand they're comparing apples to jackfruit when they're talking about Clickbank and stuff...

The former has running costs like inventory, 3rd party merchants, etc. the latter are all VIRTUAL products with almost no overhead beyond bandwidth.

The margins for physical products are so low, that's why stores like Circuit City are extinct.

If those naysayers actually had experience running ANY retail business with physical products before, they'll already know that single digit margins are common for most stores, especially if sold under consignment.

To have the minimum of 4% and all the way up to 8.5% on ANY SALES MADE through your aff link within the 24 cookie is big if you have enough sales.

You get credit for ANY items sold on Amazon... and your quantity/commission bump is based on ANY product you sell regardless of value.

If it takes 10 sales to jump from 4% to 6% commission, you can literally sell 9pcs of 99cent item and sell a $1000 item for the 10th and you'll get 6% on ALL 10 items you sold! (as long as it's not electronics/computers, which are capped at 4%/$25, respectively).

That's why it's good to cover different niches and price points when building an Amazon-based business.

There are many who promote >$300 items but have multiple ebook/kindle/mp3/low-priced goods niche sites to help bump their commission rate up regularly.

I started my 3rd Amazon site earlier this month and someone bought 15 items in one gom, that almost single-handedly bumped by commission rate from 6% to 6.5 when my photography site got stuck at 6% post-Panda.

Oh, don't forget you're not limited to the US as well because you can maximize your foreign Amazon traffic clicks as well with a simple plug-in.

Granted the sales from non-US shoppers can't compare, but over time, it'll add-up for markets you never targeted in the first place. I've made around 10 sales in EU so far hehe.
