Which would be better?

I am an advertising professional...or rather I was, until the midwest's economy caught up with the rest of the country. Now I am wanting to do a full service advertising business, especially for internet marketers, utilizing a hybrid of traditional advertising and online techniques. My question, would I be better served if I severely limited my prices to get some clients to build a track record, or would it be better if I were to start a few standard IM websites, and use my techniques then use my own numbers to justify the prices I believe I should charge?
  • Bigredrassler,

What stops you from trying both the methods?

Method 1: Allows you to get some clients, make some contacts, get paid while your work delivers value and grow your business in the process.

Method 2: Your work will fetch you more work, establish you as an expert, prove clients that you know what you are talking about and finally, help you generate more business.

For both the methods, however, you do know that you should strive to be good at what you do.

You will do well. My best wishes to you. Keep me posted on what's happening

The best way to get your full service advertising business started, is to write up what you know and publish it as a book. Real book, amazon.com. Aside from writing the book it only costs a few bucks.

Main advantage: Once you are a published author in your field, your potential customers KNOW that you are good.

Then you promote the book and you will wind up with more customers then you can easily handle.

I think this pretty much depends on how fast you want to start receiving money. I'd go for the former approach if you want it to start flowing in quickly (with lower prices), but of course with the latter you'd make more after getting everything set up. It sounds like you need the money now rather than later, so I'd go with the former.

I am seeing more advice to charge less than to create my own track record, though I do like the idea of doing both, thanks ashwin...

Here's the next question, since I am doing this solo out of my home office, my overhead is low, so as long as I bill for the actual cost of purchasing ad space or mailing list or whatever, the fees are mostly profit. My work and experience tell me I could bill $500 an hour and still produce a nice ROI for clients, but with no track record, I doubt any IMers will be willing to pay that much. So how much do I charge my "now" clients?

I add this as a caveat, I work full time, and also have other side businesses, so I can not dedicate 16 hours a day just to make a couple hundred dollars, I need a proper balance between time I spend and income I collect.

You have more experience in this than me, but charge what you believe you are worth. If you do not, you may not feel the need to do the work you are capable of. Then your reputation suffers.

It may be slow going in the beginning while you build a reputation, but you said you have a full time job right now so you will survive! Find ways to get your name out there. Highlight the work you have done in the past, and create examples of your work to show potential clients.
