Can a 'Cool' Opt-in Box Make a Difference?

I'm not talking about the page, just the 'box' which contains the form to subscribe.

I've been looking at Armand Morin's opt-in box ProductPadlock and it looks pretty cool when compared with a plain form with no styling.

Has anyone tested this?

That box has a bunch of time tested methods in it that make it convert. It is not about looking cool it is about conversion.

    First conversion secret...

Look at the button and then hover over it. Proven to increase response.

Can you point out any other elements of that box that are proven to convert?

When I hover over the button, nothing happens.

Can anyone suggest how I could have an opt-in box like that?

Sure, I can tell you exactly how you can.

        Go to the page
        Click View->Page Source (Firefox)
Find the stuff you want to copy, highlight (select) and copy (apple-c or ctrl-c)
Paste into your own html code and tweak until it looks right on your page.

That doesn't tell you the necessary CSS, does it?

I'm putting the opt-in in a WordPress theme, so I think I need the CSS and HTML.

          Might be wrong though.

The effect for those that cannot see it due to browser/settings
or whatever is simply an orange border appearing when you hover
mouse over the button (I think ... that it!? .. lol)

As far as the optin page goes ... get ya
swipe file out coz that kicks e-butt!

Here`s my "unprofessional & clueless" analysis on the layout ...

I`ll be happy to edit/correct anything here or add what I miss ...

      Page from the top ...
      • soft, easy on the eye colour relaxing the viewer
      • Header headline and byline describe the product very well
        .. looks good to
      • Video of course ... attention grabbing, professional ... darn slick!
      • Big fat downward pointing arrow above the fold to "force"
        the viewer to scroll
      • First paragraph, First 2 lines below the video describe very
well what the product does using powererful visual prompts
with the "grab" word (and "scare" words i.e. thieves)
      • Third line reinforces and explains a bit more on the capabilities
        of the product
      • Second paragraph ... power words like "Brand New" and "Fort Knox"
grab the readers attention further leading to the "fear of loss scenario"
... very subtle ... very well done in this example IMO
      • Third paragrah goes all out recapping the benefits of the product and
        adding even more benefits
... again very well done. Yellow background to attract the eye.
      OPTIN BOX
      • Powerful headline reinforcing the "free" and hinting at a
        valuable download (video)
      • Checkbox ... weaving the product benefit in again ... important
        points are bolded
      • Suggests time limited offer on a membership at very affordable
price ... creates urgency and curiosity
      • Instead of just "Name" and "Email" ... gives very clear instructions
on what to do next subconciously prompting the viewer to do so
      FOOTER
      • All legal pages you could want to allay the fears of even the most
suspicious of buyers ... link to customer service and also a physical
        address ... all reinforces trust
Anyone add to that or correct something even?

I guess there's a reason that it was designed to look a certain way. It must be converting for Armand to set it that way. Overall, it's quite a cool-looking page, I agree.

Optin box design doesn't matter as much, it is what content surrounds that box that counts so much. But that's just my personal opinion.

As far as squeeze pages go, from all I can gather, Armand Morin is one THE guys to watch and copy.

He's pedantic about testing, and uses anything and everything which will squeeze even another 1% of the visitors who land on the page.

I mean he earns nearly $60,000/day and I'm guessing he spends a frickin' bucketload on Adwords, since he's always appearing on there.

I think I might model my squeeze page on something like this, except without the video.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder!

So, as has been said, it's all about conversion, nothing else.

To answer the OP's question, not necessarily cool but, yes of course you can increase conversions by making changes.

So you need to test to see what works for your market.

And it sure can make a big difference - I increased conversions one of my own subscription forms by 76% by changing it's styling.

<ShamelessPlug>I also use the same autoresponder as Armand </ShamelessPlug>

Yeah it's not really about personal preference, it's what converts and what doesn't. Armand spends so much time and money to test what works and what doesn't, so I think it's wise to model the best.

The only possible issue with this particular page could be that it will load slow on some computers.

Thanks dude, but I can handle basic imagery HTML and CSS myself. I just had never styled a form before, and hadn't a clue.

Also...thanks to all who helped with this.

As you can see from my sig, I've launched the squeeze page, and will now continue testing and trying to drive traffic.

I have a target opt-in rate. But, this is my first squeeze page, so I'm probably going to learn a lot.

What would you do to make it above average then?

Its all in the html and css styling of the page ..
I have attached a txt file copying the elements of the page which create the box..
download it and rename it to '1.html', and open in your browser..
Its only about putting a border and background around a table..
Then, putting some background styling around the button

  • I wouldn't worry to much about the opt-in box, a simple box is fine. What is important is the reason people are going to opt-in. A free ebook? A mini-course? Some bonus etc. Then the actual content has to be excellent, you need to communicate over and over again with excellent newsletter information.

The opt-in box is simply a tool don't miss the actual execution to ensure down the track you have a loyal following that will buy when you ask...

The rollover didn't impress me, but the box looks neat and professional. You can do all sorts of fancy rollovers with CSS. But if they get too fancy, people are likely to sit there putting the mouse over and back to see the effect. You want them to click.

Seriously, I think the box conversion has a lot more to do with the nice style in general, along with the sales pitch, than with any fancy rollovers.

    Ok, another question.

I see people suggesting that the opt-in form should be visible above the fold. Is that proven to work better?

I see a lot of squeeze pages with the opt-in form below the fold after all the benefits, etc are listed.

Also, has anyone ever tried two forms; one straight after the headline/sub headline, and then another at the bottom?

      Below the fold
      Sidebar
      Unblockable popup

      "Light box" style

I think it would make for an awesome split test to put the opt in webform

where the video is and the video where the opt in box is with an arrow

that points up to the box.

The reason I think it would be a good test is because the opt in box

    would be above the fold.

Anybody else think that would be cool to split test?

    CashDoctor,
Yeah, I asked Aweber support to help me out. The guy pointed out that I just had to change the url in the HTML of the form. Duh! I didn't realise. It should be working now.

    Davemiz,
Don't worry man. The code given was only half the story and actually helped me very little. I just use it to get my head around what it was I needed to do, and then wrote my own (except for what Neil gave me).
