Who are you? Why are you sending me email?

Guys, I need some advice here.

I buy a lot of WSOs (too many), automation software tools (too busy), graphics (mine suck), so I'm on a lot of lists.

It's either a recent trend or I'm just getting fed up, but it seems most of my emails come from "Support", or "Justin", or "Your Download".

Why can't your email come from "XYZ software" or "abc WSO" or even get crazy and make it from "Fred Smith"!

I don't know who you are, and I don't know why I'm on your list. I don't want to unsubscribe, for fear that I'll not get notified when you update your software, or in case I have respect for you and want to see you next special offer to your list. But if I don't know who you are, and you don't remind me why I should be on your list, I'm gone.

How do you handle this?

I often Google their domain name, the email return address, and other clues to figure out who they are and what I might have downloaded. I also keep a list of WSO's I've downloaded, just in case. It's very handy for cross-referencing.

Oh, or search for that email address in your archives to see what else you got from them (confirmation email, initial download email, etc.)

When I get emails like that, I just delete them. Why should I follow recommendations of somebody that does not even reveal his name?

You could just as easily argue it the other way round.

If you'd bought a product from XYZ software but not remembered that the owner was called Fred Bloggs or whatever, then you could ask "Why should I follow recommendations of somebody whose name I have no reason to recognise?"

The bottom line here, IMHO, is that people not keeping in touch with their lists regularly have only themselves to blame if their lists become unresponsive, and people not sending regular mailings, but only notifying of product updates, should obviously give their business name if that's the one by which most people will remember them - or give both (company and individual's) names.

@Zabrina, I hear you. That would work. But the issue is why they make it so hard for us to stay on their list. That all works, but it takes too much effort compared to the minimal value many marketers bring. Give me a good reason to stay.

@Alexa, your points are dead on. Tell me who you are, why I should stay subscribed, and provide consistent value/communications.

My biggest issue with all this is accidentally unsubscribing from a list that might be the only way I have to find out new features have been added to software. Someday I want to get an email where the from line says "LMNOP Software Notifications".

I wish more people would provide a list for only "software update announcements".

I love the slowly developing trend to opt-in to a single list per marketer that allows you to chose the number of emails you want per week/month and what day you want to receive them. Now that's treating your list right!

I agree 100%. If you are on the list of WSO vendors it would be very helpful if they identified themselves by their product. I forget who they are and how I got on their list in the first place (especially if it is an ebook and not a tool you use very often). A few are good at keeping their brand prominent but others over time become an annoyance and get unsubscribed.
