Is This True About Clickbank Gravity.

I have just learnt something that I have never read or heard before in about 19 months of hearing and reading about clickbank and selling my own product through clickbank and I wanted to confirm it with more experienced people here to see if it is right.

I always looked at the gravity in clickbank for a product as how many products (very roughly, I know there are other factors and a certain weighting involved) have been sold by affiliates in the last month (I think it is a month). So if a product has a gravity of 100 then 100 of that product have been sold by affiliates in the last month.

However, I have just been told this is not the case and in fact, each affiliate can only be allocated 1 gravity point maximum for each clickbank product they make a sale on, so even if they have made 25 sales of a product in a month it will only count as 1 gravity point, so if you see a gravity of 25 it means that at least 25 separate affiliates have made a sale. (roughly)

The implications of this are huge to me because when I see gravity of 150 I thought okay 150 sales have been made by affiliates where as in fact there might have been 1500 sales made because each of the 150 affilates made 10 sales each.

I hope the above make sense...

Is this right?

yes that is right.. gravity is based on the number of affiliate's who have made one or more sales in the past 30 days

      Hi Jay,

As grumpyjacksa said this does change the picture dramatically, well for me anyway. Because to be honest I always treated with scepticism some of the claims about how much money there is to be made from clickbank. I mean a number of people claim to make over $30,000 a month just from being an affiliate with clickbank.

Looking at the gravity of all the clickbank products put together and knowing that several people make these claims (some making much larger claims) the maths just didn't sit right in my head.

But if it is the case that I could sell 300 of one particular product as an affiliate through clickbank and it would only count as 1 gravity point, then it all makes sense and for the first time in 19 months I can really believe deep down in my heart that it is possible as an affiliate with clickbank to make serious money.

Before I always believed, you had to be a merchant at clickbank because as I say, despite the claims of so many, the maths, never quite added up in my head and I had doubts.

Peace back at you Jay, and if anyone can double, and triple confirm what Jay said all the better.

This is how Clickbank gravity works.

If a product has 150 gravity, that means 150 affiliates have made at least one sale for that product in the last 8 months.

Even if the same affiliate make thousands of sales, he/she still adds only 1 point to the gravity.

The gravity raises only if unique affiliates start making sales.

Thanks, that's all the confirmation I need. You have know idea how much that has helped me make sense of how much people claim to make and how some of them might actually be telling the truth.

Not exactly, plus gravity can be manipulated:

Anyway, you can make way more than $30000.

From everything I understand the gravity is the number of affiliates who have made sales in the last 30 days. Just like Jay said. Even though it does change the picture, from 150 sales to 150 people, it does so in a good way, right? I think so. That means that 150 people have been somewhat successful selling this product.

Additionally, I think it is interesting to know what each of the things means.

    $/sale: $33.94 | Future $: - | Total $/sale: $33.94 | %/sale: 75.0% | %refd: 89.0% | grav: 7.78

for instance $/sale is what you earn per sale, but Total $/sale is how much the regular affiliate makes per sale, so if the total/sale is less than the $/sale then it shows there are some refunds. On top of that the %refd means the percentage of sales that come from affiliates. You might already know all of this, but in the off chance you don't I thought these things were interesting too.

So if it's strictly one point per affiliate, per 30 days, how can there decimal points on the gravity rating? Some half-assed affiliates?

Seems like there's got to be something else to the equation. Or maybe I missed something that has already been said?

This quote is taken directly from Clickbank:
Gravity: Number of distinct affiliates who earned a commission by referring a paying customer to the publisher's products. This is a weighted sum and not an actual total. For each affiliate paid in the last 8 weeks we add an amount between 0.1 and 1.0 to the total. The more recent the last referral, the higher the value added.

That would be correct Carlton. Which is also why gravity is always misinterpreted.

There could be 3 affiliates making 500 sales each per month and the gravity number won't go beyond 3.

Hence, gravity, as I see it only measures the number of affiliates who have made a succesful sale. Or in other words, the number of affiliate competition. Those products that have 500 or so gravity means only that they have at least 500 affiliates who have made a succesful sale.

People keep on saying, if it has low gravity it sucks! Well that is quite far from true. You could have 5 people selling 100 copies each per month, which would mean the product sells 500 copies a month and the gravity would be around 5 or less.

You could have 50 affiliates who sold 1 copy each in a month, which means the product only sold 50 copies that month. And the gravity would be around 50. Now which one is more profitable? Obviously the one with 5 gravity.

Sometimes high gravity products use affiliate link rotators, which rotate affiliate links for different accounts simply to raise the gravity of a product.

    Gravity is total nonsense,

    i can tell you why...

    1) The uttermost **** can rank extremely high in gravity, so gravity does in no way stand for "Quality" of a product.

    2) New and good products can have low gravity, giving the impression those products are bad or wont sell.

In fact i prefer picking "gems" from new and low gravity products, the reason is that they are unsaturated on PPC and elsewhere and easier to market than...say, Affiliate Elite or whatever "big" names where everyone and their mama promotes them already.

Use Google Analytics and you will be able to tell how many affiliates are promoting your product, or at least how many different "affiliate hops" have occurred.

The gravity means the amount of affiliates, however, I believe it is within a 6 week period. That point can be between a scale of .01 to 1 point. Clickbank does not clarify the exact formula for getting to this amount.
