How narrow would you make a niche?

I'm setting up a site in the hugley competitive self improvement niche, i've sourched several good affiliate products and have a domain.

While doing the keyword research I've started considering making the site target womens self improvement, which is a narrower niche. But a little voice in my head is whispering "your scaring away half your potential customers!"

How far would you narrow your niche?

Would you consider making a niche gender specific?

The self-improvement niche is HUGE, and there are probably hundreds of sub-niches inside that category.

It's almost like when you consider car sales. You obviously need a car, but there are plenty of "sub-cars" for you to choose. Sedan, SUV, Truck, etc...

Each category has it's own unique visitors and customers, and each category will get a lot of traffic.

But imagine if a car maker tried to go after sedans, SUVs, and Trucks, all with the same car? They would fail.... miserably.

When someone is searching for something, they want specifics. If you have a website on women self-improvement, and a woman is searching for that topic, you've just landed yourself a potential buyer/affiliate commission. Whereas if she goes to a general self-improvement website, she'll have to search through page after page before she finds exactly what she wants.

To answer your other question, yes you lose a substantial amount of traffic. Although the benefits of having a targeted visitor is far better than a general visitor.

    Hope that helped....

The half that you are scaring away might not be possible to reach anyway if you're up against a lot of competitors. Why not give your idea a go to see how it works?

getting all that good content for getting traffic for both men and women will be hard at first , sometimes we want to get everything without having nothing, so start with women and then you get some trust you could start your men campaigns.

Narrowing a niche is more art than science, since it varies for each market.

However, I would say that if there is a big market for women's self improvement (which there is) and there are available spots on the SERPs or you think you can generate other targeted traffic, then go for it.

I know women's self improvement products will sell, it's just a matter of finding your share of traffic.

So, if you've done the research and you feel confident that you can get your share of visitors, go for it!

    A "narrower" niche?

Women's self-improvement is such a huge "niche" that I'd call it a "market", myself, rather than a niche.

    A lot more than that.

    But that's just me.

I'd have to agree with you Alexa. You may want to try some split test. Fist create a landing page focused on the women's market as a whole, also create a second landing page and try to focus on an area of that that is even smaller.

      See which one does better.

I would focus on just women to start, then once that pans out look at expanding. The key is to just get started and tweak as you go.

It really depends on what type of site you are planning for. If you are putting up a one page microblog then tighten the niche.

On the other hand you may be creating a web site of 30 pages then go for some more competitive keys. Over a hundred pages of valuable content can handle a broader niche.

Have you something particular in mind?

    Cheers

Go for it! A sub-niche in that market is huge, you will have a lot of earning potential focusing on a specific issue.
