Is there a reason to set a preferred domain?

In Google Webmaster Tools you have the option to set your domain as www.domain.com or domain.com or you can choose no preference. Is there a reason why you would want to select one of these over the other or is no preference the better way?

Unless you pick one... G. might see those two URLs as two different sites!

You can chose any of them (although the www part is really obsolete), just stick with one and when building backlinks always use only one: the one you set in GWT.

Use a 301 redirect in .htaccess and it won't be an issue.

If you don't know what that means, basically Google sees www.xxxxx.xx and xxxxx.xx as two different websites. So, to tell G they are the same, you create a permanent redirect from one to the other, and then G will know it has been "permanently moved".
