Five Years in State Prison Awaits Convicted Domain Thief Daniel Goncalves - Who Wants to Be Next?
The best news I have heard this week has to be word that a convicted domain thief is going to jail for his crime. 26-year-old Daniel Goncalves will not be doing his time in some minimum security lock up either... (full story here)...

Wow. I didn't even know about this case until now. I'm glad that the law is cracking down on the hackers and scammers. The wild internet west is beginning to get more tamed.

It's a good thing that he's being brought to justice for his crime. The justice system in many countries is not always able to keep up with the progress of technology and truly understand the economic impact certain cyber activities can have.

That article does make me wonder why he is being sent to a state prison instead of a minimum security prison. If he committed electronic crimes, does he really need to be put in a prison population with more violent and hardened criminals?

I hope the 5 years will not be converted to 5 months or weeks like we see here in my domicile.

Lol, I just finished reading this about 10 minutes ago.

Maybe folks will think twice before going in for cybercrime? And maybe they won't? Still, it's nice to see the message that crime doesn't always pay.

        Hi Gene,

It looks like he'll be doing his domain stealing up in the Statesville prison from now on, up there with Sally Decker, Martin, Dutch Gunderson and Lana...

Yep, I heard about this earlier this morning. Theft is theft, no matter where it takes place and you gotta suffer the consequences!

Thanks for sharing, Gene. Hopefully this will make the cyber scam artists out there more than a little nervous about ripping people off, and stealing from them. I'm sure Daniel initially had the notion that he could get off scot-free on the internet, but this will teach him a lesson he isn't likely to ever forget.

On the surface, the perpetrator seemed bright as a fluorescent light after breaching that Godaddy account but wait, look who he stole from...

As we told you in August 2009, Goncalves picked the wrong people to steal from when he hijacked P2P.com and two other domains from industry pioneer Marc Ostrofsky and his partners Albert and Lesli Angel. Albert Angel happens to be a noted attorney and former U.S. Justice Department prosecutor. Oops!

These were not the kind of people to let anyone get away with stealing their property. The Angels tracked the thief for over a year and packaged an enormous amount of data to help prosecutors crack the case. Still, despite Albert's law enforcement background and Lesli's single-minded devotion to gathering proof for the authorities, seeing justice served did not come easily. "There were times I felt that people who have their hubcaps stolen have more remedies than victims of Internet domain theft!," Mrs. Angel said. "But I was determined to bring this thief to justice, and I am gratified by the outcome today. Other victims of cybercrime should be on alert that such theft will not be tolerated in a world where business is now conducted online."
Of all the people in the world he could have stolen from, they should have been the very last individuals on his list.

It's unfortunate that you have to have deep pockets and be a lawyer in order to see that justice is done. The average Joe would be s.o.l.

Having said that, hope he rots in there.

Love it ... that's a great story and the first time I've heard of someone actually being convicted of domain theft, even though it happens. Guess if you're going to steal domains you should make sure the victim is not a lawyer and former prosecutor. lol.

Daniel definitely had the misfortune of picking the wrong guy to tangle with, but I'm sure that when you're perpetrating a crime like this you don't really think about the consequences of who you're stealing from!
