max file size for product for downloading???

What do YOU think is the outer limits of the maximum file size for a product dowwnload?

100MB? 500 MB? 1 GB?

What about everyone having high speed internet these days? Would that alloww eveen bigger files?

I'm thinking about HD video here and that'll eat up some hard drive space and take a lot of room in downloads.

Your thoughts? I used to think 100MB was big but now not so much...

Although I have downloaded some huge programs in my times (Linux Distros, Windows ISOs, Even a couple of ISO files in excess of 9G), I am always a bit skeptical of IM products that are huge. But I guess if you were offering HD Quality Videos for a particular reason and let me know in advance that the files were going to be huge, I would not be bothered by it.

Personally, I wouldn't mind downloading 1GB; we all love lotsss of delicious content to eat up, but if you're going to be giving lots of huge videos, why not give people the option to stream, too?

Some of the download management services have tiered pricing, one was just being discussed for WSO purposes that has a 50mb limit in the basic account.

Please do consider your customers with less than monstrous download capabilities, and provide alternate resolutions, or mp3 audio only versions. I believe an entry level 750kbit DSL account takes like 30 minutes to download 100 Mb.

I suppose if you feel your target market has the capacity to handle downloads of that size, then go for it. However I've been asked a couple of times to break up files that were a couple of hundred megs, primarily by people outside the US who had problems getting a file that size downloaded without it timing out.

Why don't you use Survey Monkey and poll your list to see how they feel about it?

a survey is a great idea! Why didn't I think of that - duh...

I was thinking that anything approaching a GIG is probably too big but if you count farmers in Kansas or Iceland... it may be about 10 times what they can handle.

    Thanks for the input!
