You can get cheap domains at 1and1 if you want to wait a couple of days.

In the past I've used 1and1 to register quite a few domains. Good price and free private reg. At the moment you can get .com for $4.99 BUT they have just instituted a new domain registration process which takes 24 to 48 hours!! Ridiculous. I found out because a domain I just registered took about 36 hours before it was available. So if you can wait it's a good deal. If you can't, don't bother.

Yeah I would rather pay the whopping $3 extra dollars and 16 cents to have my domain ready to rock in a day. Hell I bought a new domain today, had it up and running on my hosting account within MINUTES.

Namecheap is the place to be I tell ya!

Yep! Namecheap is great. I made the switch when Godaddy when up on their prices.

Yeah I've never particularly cared for Godaddy, kind of seems like a "walled garden" over there. I do like their GoDaddy Girls of course haha.

I recommend Namecheap to anybody looking to buy a domain. It's affordable, easy and they have really good customer service. Great place IMO.

Is .com $4.99 net at 1and1? Does 1and1 accept PayPal as payment option? I usually use GoDaddy for ordering and renewing any domains.

      Yes, they accept paypal.

I was about to order a few domains from them last night until the billing agreement made me iffy. They force you to set the billing limit to 200.00/mth max. I didn't go through with it because IF by chance they "accidentally" hit my paypal for 200 bucks, I'd be in a mess because that's what I would have agreed to when signing up.

I wonder why they have that in their agreement especially since the domain is paid for by year(s). That's what pushed pause on my purchase with them. I need for things to be as on point as possible when it comes to me agreeing to be billed something. Maybe there is a legit reason for it but I don't see with a $20 domain purchase.

nothing against 1+1...but I have seen many of the sites
hosted with them seem a bit slooow. no idea if it is from
the hosting or their domain servers.

I use namecheap and domainmonster and domains are
active and able to be setup within 15-20 minutes.

Funny thing is if you do a whois you'll find that 1and1 have it almost straight away. So what the 24-48 hours is I dunno!

You might want to google 1&1 scam before you try 1&1. A lot of unhappy customers over a long period of time. I wouldn't touch this registrar.

Thanks for saying what I've been wanting to say Suzanne. I've had a nightmare with them. When I first started some time ago now, they were recommended to me.

My cheapest domain with them was £8.99 a year (pounds not dollars) and my most expensive was and still is £23.33. For the 13 domains I did have with them they averaged £17 a year each. Meanwhile I have to sit there watching them offer all their lovely new customers ultra low deals.

I tried to transfer them and it was impossible and they even refused to pay back one of my transfer fees.

I had to let them all expire except 2 which earn me a nice sum each month. 3 months ago I realised one had simply stopped earning money. When I looked, there was a 404 error page. Apparently I hadn't paid my annual fee for the domain. They didn't bill me or send me any notice, didn't even contact me when I hadn't paid. Simply cut me off. I paid but the site which has been #1 for my main keyword for over 2 years is now hovering around the 5th page.

      I wouldn't touch them with a S***ty stick.

Some of you seem to have missed the point, whilst I was saying there were cheap domains on offer I was pointing out that the lack of consideration for their customers made it not worth it! There is no way in this world that it should 24-48 minutes to get a domain let alone 24-48 hours. When I found that out I emailed support as to why, they couldn't have cared less.
I won't be using them anymore and I'll be transferring my domains when they become due though from some of the comments here that might not be as easy as it sounds!

          Hi Stan.

Actually I didn't miss any of your points. They were very clear, you pay for a domain then wait for ages to get it. Same thing as the bad service I received. It doesn't surprise me support couldn't have cared less, because they don't.

Regarding the transfers, yes, I do wish you luck with that. I'm now at the point with them that if there is a problem, I have to weigh up whether resolving it is actually going to be worth the stress I will invariably cause myself by just talking to them.

It's a disgrace you have to wait that long. I use Namecheap and have done since. I've had no problems and find them very friendly.

Ultimately anything will seem good after this.

Don't you realize the contradiction between the two lines above?
Recommending something that you are not going to use.

You know, people don't read, they just skim and most of them being in this cheap coupon-collector mindset (=save $3/year) - they will rush to that not-so-good-maybe-even-crappy registrar you mentioned.

The one or two days delay is not even the biggest issue with them.

            Indeed Istvan.

It is merely the first issue.

It is a jolly good and clear as blue skies sign, of exactly what will follow.

Actually Istvan I wasn't recommending it. I opened the topic because there was another topic which did recommend it and I posted to warn people that they would have to wait two days for the pleasure. But then realised that most people don't read all the posts in a topic, just the first and then reply to that so my warning wasn't being seen.

There's nothing on 1and1 to warn you that it will take up to 2 days. You only find out when you can't get at your domain.

I realise for some people it may not be an issue but 1and1 have really gone down hill, which I know a lot of people will find hard to believe as they weren't anywhere near the summit to start with.

    Here we go again ...

Use 1&1 if you want, but they've had a long and bumpy history of providing less than excellent levels of service (and that's not mentioning their customer service - which was always, in my experience, beyond atrocious), and having some very strange policies.

As I understand it, they're not quite as backwards as they used to be, but I'm not entirely convinced that they're even now a company adopting of best ethos, and I continue to avoid them like the plague. Some of my friends haven't: they get suckered in by their cheap offers, and I then continue to hear the occasional horror story.

What I'm saying is that for all their widespread advertising/exposure, and despite their size/popularity, they continue to scream "high risk" and "not worth it" to me - and apparently many others here.

    Just sayin' ...

I can only assume you haven't bothered to read the thread.

It is standard practise to get your domains immediately. If you prefer bad service, this is the deal of the decade for you.

Assuming you have read the thread, you must also think that everyone here that's had a bad experience, knows much less than you.

In which case I wish you enormous luck with them.

I also assume the link in your signature is not an affiliate link and instead you have bought a domain with the word "Microsoft lifecam" in it. I would therefore also like wish you good luck when their trademark lawyers decide your domain does in fact belong to them.

        Exactly that - Impossible.

After trying for months I set them to expire. The new hosting company couldn't even get replies off them, if they got them on the phone they would say they'd do something, then they didn't.

I could go on for sometime. After nearly four months of trying I set them to expire, exept the ones that were earning me money.

        Good luck transferring anything.

KAY. I still have to use them I just don't get in touch with them until I absolutely have to. Maybe I had a bad experience and you haven't. Nevertheless, they're just not my favourite hosting company or domain registrar company. Customer service sadly goes a long way.

1and1 is pathetic to say the least. I bought to batches of domains from them and for each batch I was over charged. They take forever to register the domain, and when they do invoice you, you can expect a few nasty surprises.

Most of the complaints about 1and1 are about hosting - not domain registration. The biggest complaint is about customer service.

I don't think 1and1 is a dicey company. They were in the business of selling hosting/domains only to businesses for years before they began selling to the general public. Their problems stem from thinking the public had the same level of knowledge as those business people did. They were used to dealing with someone in a company's computer sector where newbie questions weren't asked. They have improved customer service but could be better still. However, what I need are domains on the terms I want (paypal/auto-renew/free privacy option) so they work for me.

I don't think I have ever registered a domain and immediately built a site. Maybe others do it that way - but I plan the niche, identify keywords and register the domain before I start writing content.

I have my reasons to use 1and1 and others have their reasons not to. Simple as that.
