Make sure Apple doesn't steal your App ideas...

Hi Warriors,

Stumbled upon an (old) blog post today and thought it may be of interest to budding Apple Apps entrepreneurs.

Can Apple steal my iPhone app ideas and get away with it? | The Apps Law Blog

Thought it might interest someone.

cheers,

Spudnick

Thanks for posting this. I passed it on to a friend who is involved in developing apps for ipad. His opinion is that Apple probably wouldn't concern themselves with the average "fun" type of app but they seemingly want to leave the door wide open when it comes to apps that have more far-reaching possibilities.

I've always thought this about Apple and also Facebook. Why do you think they are so forthcoming in letting people develop apps for their platforms? Yes, it adds to the user experience but it's also a very easy way for them to find out what is successful and then run with it themselves.

Why waste all their time and money when they can have others doing all the experimentation for them? And if you don't believe that then you are very naive.

A perfect example is the Four-Square application. Facebook saw how popular that had become so they went right ahead and introduced Facebook Places - which is the same thing only it is fully integrated into Facebook now. Which one do you think will be more successful?

Actually, ideas can't be stolen in a legal sense. Anyone can put their own twist on a good idea and put out a product or service. The only thing that is protected is the details that go into a specific process in executing the idea.

They can copy any idea they see and change it enough to suit themselves. The example I gave above is proof enough...

How is this different from any other situation?

If you don't want anyone copying or stealing your idea, don't tell anyone about it. Don't even write it down. Just keep it to yourself.

You won't make a dime off of the idea then, but at least no one will steal it from under you.
