G'day

got a couple of questions about parked domains - they're gonna be those "Duh" questions...

Question 1:

I've built a site on domainA - the client wants the site transferred to domainB

The links within the transferred site on domainB haven't been changed - so every single link goes back to domainA.

If domainA is parked on the same hosting as domainB - what will happen when a link is clicked on in domainB?

Where will they go?

Will they get redirected to the correct page on domainB?

Question 2:

I have gone to a site that is parked - I get a popup blocker asking me to allow the redirection. Is that standard? Am using FF on XP.

When I use Firefox on Vista I dont get the same problem.

Is that standard with parked domains?
Will people with popup blockers have to allow the redirection?

cheers

Stef

Whether it's A, B or even C. The website hosting server to which you point your domain, is where the associated website will appear.

Depending upon how many domains that your web host will allow you to have on their servers (you can pay more to host more), will determine how many domains that you can point to that host.

A domain will only appear when it has been pointed to a web host where you can display your website(s).

I am glad to see that you appear to be using separate domain hosting and separate web hosting. This is a must do.

As for question 2. Whether or not you get a pop up will depend upon either your browser settings, or on the security settings on your anti virus, firewall, or other protection that you have installed. If you are confident that everything is ok, simply allow the redirect and you should be good to go.

    Just my thoughts,

    Jeff.

      Sorry Stef,

I misunderstood the second question. I have never experienced the issue that you describe. Personally, I think that it's local to your machine.

Why not ask some friends or colleagues to try access from their machines? That should provide you with usefull information.

      Regards,

      Jeff.

    thanks Jeff

If I can just go into question one a little more...

The site has been transferred from domainA to domainB.
None of the links have been changed - every single link in the nav bar, sidebar, post titles, images etc - every singe one is still http://domainA/...
They should have been changed but the family friend has no clue so hasn't done it
He just wants to change DNS and park domainA thinking he can do this INSTEAD OF changing the links

It doesn't work like that, does it?

Just need to double check this before I advise the client

    cheers

      Hi Stef,

If I'm following this correctly, then domain B should be redirected to the website. That is to the server link provided, that directs to the server where the website is hosted. Please read on though:-

Having said that, most domain hosting services have a facility to allow you to point a domain name to a website hosted on a remote server. This would allow domain B to point to domain A. So the website will still appear (as it has always done). It would appear though under the domain name of 'B'.

      I hope that this helps,

      Jeff.

    also...

if an existing domain with pages indexed in the search engines is parked, what happens to the ranking.

shouldn't an existing domain have 301's rather than just parking it?

      Don't believe that will work.
You can use phpMyAdmin, select the database and use a database query, for example:

      UPDATE wp_posts SET post_content = REPLACE (post_content, 'http://www.domainB.com/', 'http://www.domainA.com/');

to update links across all posts.
Make a backup before running and check with your hosting support to verify the correct query syntax. In fact, probably better to just have support do it for you.

    hi Jeff

yeah I really need to know if the links NEED to be changed in the transferred site on domainB

If you go look at this site: sewcosewingandpatchwork dot com

click on any link - it goes to sewcosewing dot com

Do they need to be changed or will parking the domain do the same job?

Sorry again Stef. For the bold 'B' read 'A'.

I'm sorry but I can't help with SEO information. Perhaps another Warrior will chime in. Personally though I would think that a parked domain would dwindle over time, due to lack of new content, visitors and back links.

      Stef,

Parking is not up to much.

Your client needs to decide what they want.

Personally, I would use the domain name that your client wants, log into the domain name host account and then use the DNS server option to re-direct anyone who clicks on the client's preferred domain to thewebsite of choice.

I would forget about parking, as your client seems bent on using a change of name for their primary domain.

As an aside, the 'Sewco Hands On Classes' on the website, gives an error when clicked.

I hope that this helps, but it's so difficult to communicate simply using text.

I will be going off line soon, as it is approaching 2:00 am here in the UK.

Please feel free to pm me if you need further assistance.

      Regards,
      Jeff.

    thanks Brian & Jeff

That's what I figured, but thought I'd better double check before advising the client.

They have an 'old friend' advising them, one who is also trying to tell them they don't need social media and basically it's all a load of bunk!

hmmm def someone to listen to lol

    cheers
