Dragon Naturally Speaking

I have seen a few threads touting Dragon Naturally Speaking. I see that Buy.com has it at half off right now. Is it worth the $50?

Absolutely, if you are going to dedicate the 1-2 hours it can take to set it up properly and train it to your voice.

I have always been a fast typist, but this stuff has allowed me to create twice as many articles in a day.

Hell yeah, thats a steal. I have the premium edition and paid almost $200.
If your slow at typing or just don't like to type all day long this is definitely the product for you.

      Best of luck,

    Hi Matt,

Dragon is pretty cool software. Definitely worth the 50 bucks if you're going to use it. At my full-time job, I've worked with the folks at Nuance several times and their voice recognition stuff is awesome. One thing that I've found using it is that it is quite different from writing, but not always for the better.

I write a lot of articles & content, when I switch over to use Dragon, I don't always get stuff done faster. Dictating what's in my head just doesn't come out as quickly as typing it does. Some people swear by it, and if you're cool with dictating stuff, then it's a no-brainer. I find that I don't use it all that much because typing is still faster for me.

It's definitely top-notch software, though, and worth th 50 bucks.

    Matt,

Pay a little more and get the version that will transcribe audio for you.

Not sure if that version that you linked to will do that. Check Nuance's site for more info.

It is definitely worth every penny I invested in it.

But I must admit that even though I will write the first ten pages of my reports with Dragon, the writer in me forces my fingers to do the walking at a certain point, when my brain and my mouth do not sync well.

      Right on.

I find it great for getting really good first drafts done, but a lot of times I do go back and edit it to how I want it.

Of course, you can always get DNS to do all of that, I just need to spend more time setting it up that way...

Thanks everyone. I pulled the trigger. Worth playing with for $50. I type fairly well, but I think I would be much more efficient with the speech to text.

EDIT: No it doesn't, it has a built-in microphone.

LOL, I didn't either till about a month ago. Guess what else I didn't know?

If I have the iphone Skype app (they don't have one for ipad) I can make calls on skype via my ipad or iphone. It's pretty sweet that I don't have to have my headseats on and be in front of the computer to talk to people.

One thing I hate is no camera. I am pretty sure iPad 2 (or whatever they will call it) will have a camera. Till then, just wait

About that dragon app, the best thing is that it's free.

It's also unbelievable accurate and noise free.

Thanks, Mohammad! So you have to use this app in any particular window? Like, can it be used in Safari if you want to post somewhere or do you have to dictate your text elsewhere, then copy and paste it where you want it?

          Thanks!

You have to dictate the text in the application window itself and then you can copy and paste where ever you want. It's kind of limited but hey it's free

    Hey Matt ~

I bought MacSpeech Dictate (DNR for Macs) at $170 . . . and it's still worth it. I had a problem with it at first, as I was "teaching" it my voice profile, and trying to keep my fingers off the keys (where they just always want to go!), and then I got busy and put it aside as something that "takes too much time" what with all the punctuation and whatnot.

Then I got an attack of vertigo a while back ~ couldn't focus well even after it had begun to subside and the meds made me sleepy/groggy and slow ~ but I needed to write three articles one day, so I thought what the heck, and got out my headset. Fastest articles I've ever written ~ partly because I couldn't see the screen clearly to catch and correct the errors! Did they have to be revised ~ yup ~ but as writer, I know it's always easier to revise content that already exists than it is to come up with something from scratch. I'd kinda forgotten that, but this was a fab reminder.

So, short answer: yup. If you're willing to put in the time to train the software and try, thereafter, not to slow yourself up with "correcting" when there's one or two wrong words in a sentence you just "wrote" ~ absolutely.

I recommend that software totally. Each dollar of its price is worth it. Although it is true, need more than a couple of hours to be able to train him and to make your voice suitable. On the other hand, I love to control the computer with the commands of voice when I lazy.

Yes, it is worth it. If you are really smart get up and go to Target or Best Buy and you can get the basic version for as little as $43 after taxes on sale. I was shopping for a mic for podcasting and screencasts when I saw it by accident. I have been addicted ever since.

I get 5x's as much done these days as far as production.

Thanks for the information. I have a copy of dragon naturally speaking that I bought last year. I spent about 20 minutes setting it up, and became frustrated because I can type pretty fast. So it's just been sitting there. I think I'll try it again.

Personally I don't like it. I'm a fast typist, and dragon usually ends up forcing me to correct too many little things, especially when I talk about obscure topics or use terms not normal to standard english such as backlinks, SEO, and various complex IM or gaming terms.

Overall I suppose it's still worth it though, if you can get past that.

I second that. It's mostly important for those who cant'
type that fast. If you are a fast typist, then you really
don't need it, unless you want to spend so much time

I have been using dictation software for the last year. I find it most effective when writing sales letters, blog posts, blog comments and thread replies :-)

I used it to craft this reply.

If you are serious about Internet marketing, and you need to get things done quickly, you need dictation software.

I have the version for iPhone. I have found it hard to use just because I often re-read articles and re-write them in the process and I haven't figured out a good way to do that yet with the software. From the great reviews, maybe I need to give it another shot.

Windows Vista has this pretty much built in, so I do not see the reason to buy it unless it for somereason really trumpts the vista system that I believe comes with the package.

I was just about to tell Steve the same thing.

Steve, try the built in software on Vista and Windows 7 and then try DNS.

Wow, then DNS must be pretty good, because my Vista system works like a pro, its fast and accurate.

Maybe its because I have a pretty new computer with 9 GB of RAM?

          The RAM definitely helps.

To be honest, I haven't tried the Windows 7 speech software, mainly because I've had DNS for a while and did actually try the Vista software.

When I tried the Vista software, I HAD to get DNS again, so I've stuck with it.

I have DNS 10 Preferred and really like it. I plan to get DNS 11 this next year.
