Free Easy Quick Wordpress Squeeze Page Tutorial

I've seen lots of posts on the forum asking about squeeze pages, especially for Wordpress. Now, I tried to search to see if there was anything similar on the forum already giving out the information I'm going to share, but with no luck I didn't find one using my specific technique.

So, I decided as a way to give back, I've created a tutorial on how to create FEQ (Free, Easy, Quick) Wordpress Squeeze Pages. I know some people might prefer regular HTML, other software, plugins, etc. but this is for the rest of the people that are wanting another way to do this that doesn't cost anything, it's easy and quick once you learn how to do it.

What you need
  • Wordpress (of course)
  • 2 Plugins
    • Page Columnist
    • TinyMCE Advanced
  • Wordpress Theme That Supports/Has Built-In One Column Pages
  • Autoresponder (I use Aweber, I haven't tested this using any others)
Step 1
Install the 2 mentioned Plugins. Page Columnist, and TinyMCE Advanced (no spaces between tiny and mce).

Under settings you'll want to customize TinyMCE Advanced to make the toolbar look how you want it to. I recommend adding the Font Size, Paragraph, Font Family, and Insert Movie buttons. By default Split Page should already be included in your toolbar, if it isn't you'll need to add this as well, because this is what will make Page Columnist create your squeeze page.

Step 2
Make sure your theme allows you to create pages as one column and no sidebars. To check this go to Pages > Add New.

Now, if you're using the latest Wordpress (3.0.3), on the right hand side of where you're going to make a new page, you should have an options box titled Page Attributes. In this box you will see a menu drop-down box with the title Template. Default Template should be the default option, but if you're theme allows you to create a one-column page with no sidebars, it should have a drop down option of something like One Column Page, or similar.

If you're given the option to create a one column page, you can move on to the next step.

If you are not given the option to create a One-Column Page, you'll need to find a theme that allows for this. The easiest way is to go to Appearance > Themes > Install themes. From here check the box in the Columns area that says One Column, and then scroll down and click Find Themes. This will display all the themes on Wordpress that support a minimum of 1 column.

Step 3
To create your squeeze page, you need to make a new page. Pages > Add New.

Now, this will be your format for this tutorial, in order to create a video squeeze page where the opt-in is next to the video.

Code:
Headline
-------insert next page/split page/page break-------
Video
-------insert next page/split page/page break-------
Opt-In Form
The headline is where you create your headline of course, then you'll use the Split Page button, then insert your video (if using youtube video) by clicking the TinyMCE Insert Movie button & make sure to click "Constrain Proportions" so the video inserts correctly, and then click insert.

Last, is inserting your opt-in form. So, insert another page break, and if you're using Aweber, copy the javascript version of the code. Now, in Wordpress where you're making this page, by default you're creating your page in Visual. You want to click on the HTML tab that's next to the Visual tab, and scroll down to where you typed in Opt-in (if you typed it in) and put the javascript code for your autoresponder below the last page break you created.

Now, when you click on the Visual tab once again, your opt-in will be invisible, but don't worry, this is normal, and it will show up when you preview and/or publish your page.

Step 4
It's time to get this page to work properly so that it actually looks like a decent squeeze page, so scroll down to find the Page Columnist options box.

By default Wordpress - Next Page is checked, so you need to change that to First Sub Page as Header. The rest of the options can be left default.

Code:
If you wanted a squeeze page that has a header, video, opt-in, and content below the video and opt-in, you'll choose Interior as Columns. Experiment for what works best for you.
Step 5
Change the page template by finding Page Attributes box on the right hand side of the page. Like I mentioned in the beginning, change the drop-down box option to One Column Page, or whatever your one column template may be called.

Ok, that's going to be it. It may seem like a lot, but it's really not. The setup to install the plugins and get a theme if you don't have a supporting theme will be the longest process. After those two things are solved, creating squeeze pages takes only a few minutes.

I've included a video link to my website for the visual learners at the end of this. If anyone has any questions feel free to ask me, but just as a note, I've only tested this using Aweber, and youtube videos, which work perfectly for this method.

It really is as easy as it sounds. I've had the Page Columnist plugin originally for a different reason and then one day I was just like Hmm, let me try something ...

And out popped a squeeze page haha... so I thought I'd share this with everyone.

I had a horrible time trying to create one using tables before, it was such a headache, so I know where you're coming from. There's of course plugins, and one that I won't mention the name of, but it costs $97, and from what I've seen from just the video, it creates the same result that I've shown how to create. I can't say that product is good or bad, because I haven't tried it, but I will say that a free, easy, and quick way to duplicate similar results of a $97 plugin isn't too bad.

Sorry, I rarely check this post, but which link are you referring to, the link at the end of the post to my website? I just tested it using Chrome and it works, so I'm not sure which link you're referring to, maybe try again. Or maybe the site was down in April? .. It seems to be working now.
