Local listings using Google Maps

For some time I have been interested in local listings - particularly those that show up next door to the Google map for a local search (for business that operate in a local area this is very much more interesting than anything one can do with either SEO or PPC).

But I am struggling to understand what factors one needs to play with to drive one's listing up the map listings. The official line appears to be that the closer your address is to the centre point of the map, the higher you are likely to be in the rankings. But this does not appear to be true - I have an example where the two top ranked sites are both further away from the centre point of the map than many lower down.

I also have examples where highly ranked sites feature either broken links or have nothing whatsoever to do with your search (it looks like the site in question was submitted a long time ago to the Google local category and Google has never actually checked the relevance).

What I am looking for is any advice that Members might have or indeed anything published recently on achieving good rankings in the local listings.

Walter: I'm not sure if this would be a help, as I'm still learning about Google Maps myself and how to make proper use of the service. I hope someone more knowledgeable will reply to this post with better info.

Have you ever checked out snap.com? They offer Google maps as part of their service - you can link to an exact location using Google Maps. Whether or not this helps with ranking, I really can't say.
