Internet Marketing Is Very Hard. Don't Try It!!

...Only joking

I am a newbie (a few months in IM) and although I got some great tips and advice from this forum, on the whole I have not found IM easy!

The technique I am concentrating on to generate traffic is article marketing.

Hopefully things will get easier!

What exactly are you doing with your article marketing?

I know I've done my fair share and it can be very hard when not done effectively, maybe we can share a few tips to help you increase your effects, but you must reveal your current approach so that it may be analyzed.

Haha! You've got me on that title. Actually, it's true that Internet marketing is very hard. There's a huge learning curve in IM. If IM is easy, everybody will be millionaires overnight.

People who say that IM is easy are usually those who have succeeded in this field. It's just like lawyers saying that writing a legal document is easy, or mechanics saying that fixing a broken car is easy. It's easy for them because they've mastered their professions/careers. Once you get over the hump and master the intricacies of IM, then this field becomes second nature to you.

At first IM is really boring and to difficult for a person who have no background on internet marketing, but as you go a long with lot's of tutorial you will see that it's as easy as abc.

I think article marketing is a great way to get started online and even create a successful business out of. Just remember to always to your keyword research, write quality articles, and solve peoples problems! A eye catching title can also have a great impact on syndication and views.

Get some traffic, see how your product is converting, do minor tests with Web site, copy, and click-throughs. One small adjustment could make a huge difference in your earnings per article.

    Keep at it!

Can your define article marketing for us?

I'm asking since almost everyone defines it differently.

    To me article marketing equals:

    1. Posting articles on my blogs, social bookmarking them, submitting RSS feeds, and announcing them on Twitter.

    2. Posting articles on high value directories to hopefully get the articles syndicated and read on the article directories, also. Driving traffic to my blogs on #1.

    3. Posting articles on Web 2.0 sites with the aim of driving traffic towards my blogs from #1.

    4. Using my articles to create videos which are designed to drive traffic to my blogs on #1.

The list could continue going on. The point, are you using your articles in as many forms and distribution methods as possible?

The other critical point, before doing all of the work above, make sure you do very intensive keyword research to find phrases you can compete on, have adequate number of searches per day, and are within a market which allows you to find NUMEROUS phrases which meets those requirements.

The important thing, you are taking action and learning. It will get easier, just keep expanding your knowledge and your internet footprint.

    Take care,

    Barry

      Hello!

Thanks very much for your detailed reply.

      So far I have done:

      • Keyword resarch (came up with 5 long tail keywords)
      • In the process of writing 10 articles per keywords (have written 38 so far - 19 lives)
      • Once articles have been accepted, took them to my own blog, Goarticles, Articlesbase, Articlewarehouse and sooper articles
I am not yet familiar with Twitter, RSS feeds

      • Social bookmarking (is prosterous a good tool?)
      • Posting articles on Web 2.0 sites (dont' know what they are)
      • Using my articles to create videos (I would not know where to start + I have not exactly got a recording voice - (I sound a bit like a goat - may be this can be outsourced?)

Twitter is simply a micro-blogging or public texting tool. It is just one added avenue for announcing your content and creating low-value backlinks.

RSS Feeds are newsfeeds of your blogs or content sites. By submitting them to RSS submission sites your feeds are distributed and create additional backlinks to your sites.

Posterous is not a social bookmarking tool, but a content distribution tool. It includes a blog on their site, plus the ability to autopost to Facebook, Twitter, Blogger, Wordpress, Flickr, Picasa, Buzz, Xanga, LiveJournal, and other platforms for your content.

For Social bookmarking there are tools like Onlywire, IMAutomator, SocialBot, and others to speed up the process. I only bookmark content on a handful of sites most commonly. It helps speed up the discovery of new content and leaves more trails towards your content funnel.

Web 2.0 sites would include Squidoo, Weebly, Tumblr, and a wide range of other sites. In the most part they are "free" locations to put content and point links towards your money pages.

Creating videos does not always require your voice. You can use creative commons music or sound effects for the audio and tell your story using a powerpoint slideshow you record using a program like Camtasia or Camstudio. You can even create decent videos using Microsoft's Live Movie Maker.

As Caliban told you, the most important component of any of this is to observe where your traffic comes from, do more of it, and less of what does not work.

I have niches where a majority of my traffic comes from YouTube videos even though I think they are tacky. Other niches have almost no traffic from YouTube, but get traffic from phrases I targeted and am now ranked on Google. Another site gets almost every bit of traffic from articles at this point.

I watch my Google Analytics very carefully to see where traffic is coming from and then try to analyze why. Google Analytics will help you track down when your content gets syndicated and where the traffic is coming from. (Good time to send a thank you note to the blogger who is using your content. You may be able to do a guest post for them and increase your exposure.)

Article marketing is a slow-build technique. There are three things that make it work.

    1. You have to write a lot of articles. As in hundreds. Preferably a thousand or more. So expect to spend three to six months writing articles.

    2. You have to pay attention to how your articles perform. Every week or two, go look at your stats and see what people read. What people click. What people syndicate to their own sites.

    3. You have to do more of what works and less of what doesn't. Try to understand why people read, click, and syndicate things you've written, and also why they don't read, click, and syndicate other things.

Notice that there is nothing here about keyword research or competition analysis. Most people waste far too much time on these things. The only thing outside of writing articles that should occupy much of your time is product selection.

You're right Beatrice - it is hard.

You'll see a lot of sales pages telling you a newbie can be rich within a month but it's nothing like the reality of the situation and most people vastly underestimate what is required to be successful.

Like Caliban says - even if you just focus on article marketing, for most people they'll need hundreds or thousands of GOOD articles (not cheap re-written plr) in order to make any decent money.

I understand totally how you feel.

Yeah, i have good offline businesses. And only for the past 3 years have i tried the IM thing. I started with the article marketing thing. After a month i gave up. So what did i do? I made my own product. Charged only $3 for it. And built my list by offering myself as a contributor on give away sites. Yeah, they charged for me to just put my offer on, but, it was a lot easier than writing those horrible articles.

Now, because of my product creation, i now pay someone to write for me.

Not everyone can afford the giveaways. But, it is well worth it in the long run.

I am an under the radar marketer at the moment. But, i am thinking of coming out and showing people how i really do it.

I think it's a lot like anything new you try that you're unfamiliar with.

You gotta figure out the basics, what you can keep up with, & what drives people to take an offer (& how to effectively get in front of them).

There's a "feel" to it that you pick up over time.

I'll say that sure, it's not dead simple ... but it's a whole lot easier & more enjoyable than shoveling heavy lead sinter slop back onto conveyor belts in the deep, dark pits of a 130*F lead smelting plant.

Been there, done that. I prefer IM. :-)

        Hi Beatrice,

Keep in mind this is a startup business you are attempting. In the offline world, most Venture Capital firms wouldn't expect a startup to make money for several years in a typical scenario, and IM beats that if you work at it consistently.(most people don't)

Remember, the learning curve is very steep, but if you make the climb, you'll never have to do it again. Starting your own business is always extremely tough, but the internet allows you to do it with less money and experience than ever before.

Hang in there, keep digging, and the gold will come!

As for the fake come-on's and "instant profit gushing overnight riches"...ignore them for what they are...nonsense!

This is true, and this is why you should never quit your regular job to do IM full-time unless you are making more than your salary consistently (for at least 6-12 months!) Quitting any earlier could cause you to seriously regret your decision later on.

I found it quite hard when I was starting out because of my complete lack of technical knowledge. SEO, HTML, FTP - it all seemed like a foreign language to me. It probably took me about a year to get my first site up and running.

I enjoy learning new things though, and I didn't really mind spending a few hours a day on it (I had a day job which took care of the money side of things).

It's very rewarding when things start coming together so stick with it. Personally I've found article marketing to be a great way to get traffic to my sites.

    Hi,

There is no easy way out and in the end it is the hard work you put that gives a return, you just need to be consistent. Try spinning your articles to make 10 to 20 versions of a single one and then submitting them to revenue sharing article directories. If you want, you can hire someone to manually spin your articles. Try social bookmarking sites, like digg, xomba, stumbleupon, etc sign up to all of them (get the list from google) and then use automatic ping tool (google it) that automatically submits your content to all the social bookmarking sites.

See you around with more updates.

I am some what new to IM myself. There are days when I sit down to go to work on my business and it seems as though I am lost. One thing that motivates me each time though, is knowing that if I work/learn for 3 or 4 hours each day, I will ALWAYS make progress towards my goal by the end of the day. I have never went 'backwards' by putting in the time to pursue my goals. Just chip away each day and success will come.

If you want to drive from California to New York, you won't get there in one day. However, if you have a road map and continue to get up and drive a little each day, you will eventually get there.

      Hi Beatrice,

To the OP: if it would be easy, then everybody from the globe and his/her dog would do it. Why don't they do it since the opportunity exists? Because it needs work! They have 'the glass is half empty' mindset. With that approach success isn't accessible, as I can see.

Right mindset, correct plan, consistent work and persitence are those what leads you to succed. See this as 'the glass is half full'. If you do it, sooner or later your glass will be filled in. And as you move forward, you will be more experienced and things will become more easier.

It's a great start. Congrats! Now you can realize that correct direction and persistent work brings result. This is one of the things that can motivate you. Keep it up.

Wishing you much successes and a Merry Christmas!

Find new ways to go in your path.If you feel the road is not good, change it and think of something better.

I'm not saying here to feel down after you get wrong and let down your work. What i'm saying is updating is important.Good luck.

  • Article marketing is a great tool, but just make sure you only post to the big boys. It's too much work, and not worth spinning articles and submitting to a ton of directories. Try tying your article up with you tube videos (linking them). Play around on Twitter and Face Book too.

Internet marketing can be overwhelming. There are alot of ways to make money online, the key is to pick one and stick with it otherwise your gonna have information overload.
