Haven't Made A Single Sale

I sell guitars online affiliated with Amazon. I have spent lot on some programs that teach you how to make money online. I bought Dan Brock's Program and at least traffic is increasing but I have not sold anything. Is there anyone like me out there who experienced the same thing but now making money? Please give some tips.

Are guitars items people buy online? I always viewed them as something people would like to "try on", so to speak. Target products that you know people buy online. Be sure to target products you can rank for. I'm currently earning $x,xxx per month via Amazon and have been for some time now.

I use a mix of sites like the one below and Web 2.0 properties.

Yip, guitars are personally not something I would buy online. It's like a couch or bed. Ideally you want to try it out before you buy it.

This is a good point. Guitars are tactile and they each have their own sound. People want to feel them and hear them. It would seem to me to be a very tough online sale.

Recently someone here was talking about how tough it was to sell office chairs online. To me, that is something else I would always buy in a store. I want to examine the construction and I want to sit in the chair before buying. I would never buy one online.

You can sell anything online, but some things fit better than others. I think guitars would be a tough sell.

At the very least, I would try to find someone who is succeeding selling guitar's online and then mimic them.

Haha, that is very funny you should mention that. Here is a small excerpt taken from a list of 10 Internet Millionaires before the age of 30:

        8. Sean Belnick – Biz Chair, 20, $42million

BizChair.com was created in 2001 by its then fourteen-year-old founder Sean Belnick. With only a $500 investment and the advice of his stepfather Gary Glazer, a veteran of the office furniture business, Sean began running BizChair.com out of his bedroom. In 2008, Belnick reached $42 million in revenue.

Clearly there are a lot of people out there who disagree with you. Yes, people like to go and try things before they buy them, however the trend these days is people go into the shop and try the product, then they go home and buy it cheaper online.

There was a big news story on this the other night here in Australia. Retailers had noticed this Christmas a huge increase in people coming in and trying on clothes and then writing down the sizes and brands and walking out without purchasing. Obviously they then go home and buy it online.

I see your point about chairs. People do go look in a store and then buy online. Also, I imagine that bigger companies might buy this way too...you could get a huge bulk sale off one click of the mouse from one of them.

I wonder if the same thing is true with guitars since it is more of an individualized purchase? The OP can't make a sale and this could be a factor.

People can sell anything on the Internet. Some are just easier sells than others.

I agree with others about the banner ad being far too big. I'd either reduce it to make it fit near the About part on top (Above the Title) or delete it completely.

You want the visitor to be lead to the sales page.

Which brings up another point. What are you targeting?

And are the keywords optimized well?

When targeting the eMedia Guitar Method then you want to optimize the keywords better.

Targeting other product names such as Zoom ZG21NU is good for a buyer keyword as long as you are on the 1st page of Google.

It doesn't look like your on Googles first page for this keyword.

If you are not on the first page then you wont get traffic to make any sales.

Keep at it, you seem like you are on the right track. With more back links you could be there and making sales soon.

          I hope this helps.

I totally agree with this. 3 people in my family are musicians.. and I know it's not good to "generalize" but they snarl at the thought of buying a guitar online!

Wolf.. like how you said "try on," that's totally accurate.

There are always going to be people who'll absolutely hate the notion of shopping for something online, basically sight unseen, even though they are able to see, touch and feel the same exact merchandise first at a brick and mortar store.

Then again, there are also people who thrive on shopping online and love picking up bargains and deals at e-commerce websites; how else can we explain away the explosive popularity of sites like Amazon and eBay?

I was a little unnerved at first when I started buying physical items online several years ago, but now I simply couldn't live without the convenience, choice and variety available when shopping online - I have bought everything from computers, laptop batteries, cellphones to water filters and gourmet/exotic meats online, and I'll probably never buy another computer or cellphone from a physical brick and mortar store ever again!

The key with your guitar site is to test and track it - you must get some traffic coming to it first before you can determine if it converts well or not. Don't think you can just let the site sit there with very little traffic, and then come to the conclusion that it's not working. That's the classic mistake many newbies make - without sending some traffic to your site first, you simply cannot make a determination one way or the other!

Wolfmmii makes some good points. I still have yet to implement so take my info w/ a grain of salt but it seems that you have to think of what people would normally purchase online. What would you buy online? Maybe target some other keywords or a specific type of guitar that is rare to find. What makes you stand out? Good luck!!! Hope to see a posting from you that you made a sale soon!

Your page has a lot of problems... That is probably the reason you aren't getting sales. I will point out a couple.

    1. You are wasting all your valuable space above the fold with a GIANT header graphic. You need to have more compelling content above the fold.

    2. Your content isn't really preselling me very well and there is no clear call to action.

    3. You have some sort of weird traffic exchange popup going on - for me makes me instantly want to leave.

      All of that plus:

You title says: Zoom ZG21NU Guitar Multi Effects Pedal and USB Interface

What is that supposed to mean? Don't just create titles from search engine bots but create titles for human readers because they have credit cards not the bots. This title would be better if it said:

Zoom ZG21NU Guitar Multi Effects Pedal and USB Interface Review

Just one word makes it look tons better and gives this incomplete phrase a meaning.

There is just too much going on on the page and it's not easy to read the page. Change your font and clean up your site. Add a little space in between lines.

Have a CLEAR call to action on your reviews. Tell the readers what to do after reading the review.

For example, you can buy _____________ on amazon at [affiliate link].

I can keep on going but I will stop making sense as it's 12:09 AM here so I will stop

I agree, and adding that calling yourself a Guitar "newbie" probably doesn't help either. You should be the "expert" in your field and industry. Why would I want to buy from a guitar "newbie"? Nobody would.

      Definitely agreed.
And all those colors, especially that red color for the prices, is a little bit of pain for the eyes, I hardly can concentrate on reading on your website.
I'm thinking if you are getting traffic then these people are leaving very quickyl.
Did you monitor how long the people who visit your site stay on the site?
I'm guessing that the majority is leaving within 20 seconds. No offense here.
So try to improve your site and you will see sales coming.

You know if you want to increase your conversions you should start doing videos. Do you play guitar? If you do or know someone that do then you can record that person or you doing song covers of popular songs. Upload them on youtube. You should have some kind of interactivity on your site. Since you're using a wordpress platform then you should be blogging and start being active on your site.

It'll be more organized that way if you had blog post. That's one long scroll down of information. You should break those into blog post.

Start participating in music related blogs and forums.

My husband buys guitars online and I really like the above suggestion.

There are so many places to buy guitars what will need to set you apart is YOU.

So make some tweeks (great suggestions have been given to you) and then put your personality into your site and involve your prospects so that they want to come back and see what you are up to.

I didn't need to critique your site because in your OP I saw 2 words in the same sentence... "Guitar" and "Amazon". Before I explain why that is, let me first just say your niche is not a buying market. Trust me, I've been a pro guitarist for 25 years.

        1. Most of your target market has to borrow their rich friends mobile phone to call their sisters for money to buy guitar strings. You would need heaps upon heaps of traffic for a single sale (I think someone else mentioned this above)

*2. A guitar, pedal FX, amps, and rack gear are all highly personal purchases for 99% of the players. They'll be at stores trying the gear out long before a blind purchase happens. The only people buying a guitar from Amazon would perhaps be a parent getting there son his first guitar as a gift. The EXTREMELY low percentage of cats buying guitars online will be going directly to Sweetwater or another of the heavy hitting online music stores. This is simply because literally everyone in my industry with enough money to spend intimately knows these stores.

        3. My first site online was a guitar site, an online learning course. In a few years I've accumulated heaps of monthly traffic, and I earn fine from it, but only from the teaching course (and from strings, picks, straps, and commissions and consignment sales from subscribers). I wouldn't even dare put an axe on my site that linked to Amazon. It would *insult my readers. Even if Amazon had Jimmy Hendrix' Woodstock Strat on sale I would have to write a paragraph qualifying the Amazon link. Even then I'd expect to lose subscribers.

So my advice to you would be: If you can play like wild fire and know how to teach a good and original technique, do a video course. Having said that, there's a crap load of competition out there in this niche, some of the courses being high quality and totally free.

Sell some very peripheral things, things that a guitar guy would consider a hassle to have to go and buy at the store. (strings, straps, magazine subscriptions, tuners, e.t.c...) But IMO sell nothing that pertains to the actual instrument, nor anything else an axeman would use to produce his sound (amps, FX, e.t.c...) - at least until you have some serious authority and heaps of traffic.

I would lose the big header up top. When people land on your page they need to see something of value immediately (above the fold). big headers are a killer for conversions.

Another thing that I would do is not have all of your texts written in one big paragraph. Each posts needs to be broken up into multiple paragraphs (maybe even bullet points) in order to make it easier on the eyes.

I would also make the page shorter, and have more pages/posts for people to view. This will probably lower your bounce rate, and give people the time they need to make an informed decision.

What more you can do on Facebook you can start a small contests and giving away discounts , will fetch a good audience.

I have a site I sell bass guitars on via Amazon. I run an seo company so we have several #1 overall Google.com rankings as you might imagine. It is unbelievable the amount of traffic it takes to make even a single sale. But I do well selling guitar strings and hard shell cases. (Which is a hint by the way).

I agree with the big header, if you have Dan Brocks Deadbeat Super Affiliate then why not try using the theme he gives.

It all looks a bit messy to me and isn't really set up at all how Dan explains in his product. I would recommend going through Dan's product again and changing the site to comply with his product and see if your conversions increase.

      Needs a lot more work.

Header takes up more than half of your page...most people never even scroll down once, so no chance to ever pull them into your content.

Also, the paragraph needs better formatting. It doesnt look fun at all to read.

Needs more affiliate links, should also add an affiliate link to your image.

Lol I was wondering when you'd comment on this... I grabbed a copy of DBA as well, and well there's a lot you aren't getting out of Dan's program you really should be.

        For starters:
        • In Dan's videos, he leaves all the sidebars, not always the best idea as if a reader is looking for reviews and sees basically a "content" site, it can turn them off.
        • Secondly, all of your reviews are 5 stars. Sort of defeats the purpose of having a review.
        • The formatting sucks (not trying to be rude, just giving it to ya straight, constructive criticism is key in this industry). Work on how it actually ends up looking, you want someone to say "this looks like fun to read". (Not literally of course, but you get the point )
        • The header is huge, definitely significantly shrink that, possibly even remove it entirely.
        • The traffic exchange thing is... well bluntly it's a turn-off. Had I not kept reading the thread I would have just closed the site and never gone back. Remove that, or at least hide it.
        • Fix your social bookmarking buttons so they go horizontally instead of vertically.
        • Space out your posts, one every 3-4 days. I noticed you have several on the 8th, the 10th, and the 16th. Go back and change the dates even, it can potentially help your Google ratings. (No guarantee there but I have had some success doing that)
        • Spread out the posts onto more than one page. Having your blog scroll for 5 miles is a bit of a turn off. Reminds me of a blogger blog, which are honestly the biggest pain in the a$$ to read.
I'm not sure whether or not your doing daily back-links, but just keep as it and the sales will come. Especially around the holidays, you'll probably see at least one sale before the end of the month.

Hope this helped you out somewhat.

"rock guitar newbie" - start by explaining that this site is for newbies - what is a rock guitar (why is it different from other guitars), what's the price range, where can I learn how to play, what are the different types of rock guitar (if there are, I don't know).

Lose a lot of the space. Shrink the header ( as others have said), put extracts from your posts on the front page, lose the blank space beside the product pics, make the sidebar more enticing - no need for meta and pages. Shrink the menubar at the top of the site. I would get rid of the date on the posts - it adds nothing to the reader experience and just makes your site look "dated" very quickly. In fact, I wouldn't use posts, I'd use pages.

    Just a few suggestions.

  • I know what it feels like to see no sells coming in for quite some times bringing frustration on your side. The real beauty of online marketing is that you have many opportunities to unlock your potential and start building your business in less than a mere hours of time. As for now my tip would be for you to start to sell some other stuff other than guitars till the proper time it appears. Here I am not saying that you should give up what you have started but to unlock some other niches which can sell better than what you are offering right now. And remember some commodities are seasonal for that matter.

You can use product promotion. You must apply affiliate marketing campaign. The more people know your product, the greater chance it will be sold. That's the point.

You could try selling something less "Physical" in nature. A guitar is something most people might want to visit a shop to see before buying.

I don't mean that sales can't be made online, but your keywords have to be low competition, long tail keywords. It has to be keywords people use in searching for products.

As someone who plays the guitar myself, I would never purchase one online. I have to "feel it" first. Sometimes the fret boards don't have enough action and sometimes the strings are too tight for my liking.

Honestly, I would choose an entire different niche. Just my opinion.

You would be much better off selling learn to play guitar courses. There would be a lot more people online looking for those types of things than the actual guitars themselves - and you would earn more per sale as well. I'm a musician (drummer) and I also wouldn't purchase an instrument online. Everyone has their own local music shop and I would much rather go there. They are always willing to negotiate on price when you sway a pile of cash in front of them. I also wouldn't want to wait and risk what might happen to my instrument during shipment.

And if you promote guitar courses and build a list like you should, you could keep doing reviews of guitars and send them to your list. People who are just learning are going to need a guitar!

If you want to stay with selling physical goods, as another poster mentioned, try selling things guitarists need all the time and are not purchases they will put much thought into - things like guitar strings. Build a list and then sell them guitars and courses.

Could you offer both? Since it's a newbie guitar site then both would complement one another.

If you want to try something interesting, scroll down the page quickly and see if anything captures your attention. As I scrolled down your page, nothing really caught my attention.

So in addition to what has already been said, the color of your headlines look faded and the typeface is too small. I didn't see any subheads so someone can skim the page and get the jist of what you are trying to do with the page.

I also think you need to start testing what works and what doesn't. You might also start reading the Warrior copywriting forum as there is some great advice posted there. Post your page there and ask for a review by the experienced copywriters (they may or may not find it here.)

I found the header loaded quickly and then I was saying to myself; "is that all there is"? I then noticed the page had not finished loading. Even once the page filled up after waiting a considerable time and I scrolled to the bottom of the page there were still photographs loading.

It might have been my connection but I would certainly cater for people who do not have the fastest of broadband connections.

Jennifer is absolutely right on. People do buy guitars online, but I would never do it. Guitars have "souls", and even two of the same models made one right after the other can have a different sound and feel.
I love the idea of selling other things like strings and tuners and such, just to build a list. This is a great idea.
I think there's lots of interest in this niche, but it might be more geared towards how to play the guitar rather than actually buying guitars.
      Just my two cents.

It looks like you're taking part in a traffic exchange, judging from the popup.

This is very low quality traffic and unlikely to convert.

Honestly, I'd suggest going with either Fresh Store Builder or Affiliate Niche Script if you are trying to earn income from Amazon as a store. Both are very SEO friendly and provide for a very professional looking website.

The current style doesn't instill trust, especially with a traffic exchange popup.

If you want honest feedback....that site needs some serious work. To be honest it looks like a blog and not a store, I could not really tell if I could buy something from it. I seen alot of links but no BUY NOW or ORDER HERE buttons. No one is going to go through your site mousing over evey link looking for a buying option. The images are pictures of famous people playing the item.....no close up or clear pictures of the items. This site just looks like a bunch of pictures and the cost of the items in the pictures are posted below.

I am sorry, if I were looking for a guitar I would not buy one from an online blog.

As a guitar player (I own around ten electrics), I would never buy a new guitar online, but have bought a cheap second hand one to muck around on. Like most things, I would prefer to play the guitar first and get a feel and also hearing the amp.

I would suggest that you try selling things such as sheet music, accessories and guitar books/courses. If you really want to sell effects pedals, make some videos of you (or a friend) trying out different sounds/effects on different pedals and compare them. I know when I bought mine, I did some reading of reviews (pre Youtube days) but ultimately went into a store and tried it out first.

There are about 37 million monthly Google searches for the keyword Guitar and around 800,000 for electric guitar, so I’d say the niche is there!
On a personal note, my Father-in-law has to date bought 6 guitars online, he’s in his 60’s and it’s the only thing he’s ever bought online as he’s scared of the internet. I know that’s only one person, but he couldn’t find what he wanted locally.
I’d put your lack of sales down to effective marketing and maybe your search engine position (although I don’t know what that is) I’d definitely persevere, as I think there could be a huge market out there for you, don't give up!

Yeah guitars are a hard item to sell on the internet because most people want to pick it up and try it first.

Also as said big banners rarley work, now a banner with informative information in it, that can work. It works well for me, as it catches people's attention and they read.

Also make it easy to read, straight and to the point, no big jumbled up bunch of words. Give people valid points and they will use them to help form their decision. Give them tons of words and paragraphs and they'll just leave.

It takes a while to make sales too, have to get a good following, took me a good 3 months before sales started coming in and another 2 months before they became a bit more steady.

Personally I don't mind the graphic.
What I would suggest is you have a static front page.

Also you seem you seem to have something not displaying, are they adsense blocks?

Plus the text is all running into itself with no breaks, makes it harder to read.

I agree about getting rid of the traffic exchange popunders. It's not the IM niche, so anyone in the guitar niche may see that as adware and not revisit your site as a consequence.

      That's my thoughts,
      Gordon
p.s. having said that, as a rubbish guitarist myself, I may go back to the site for some more playing info! That leads me to think it's the info that appeals rather than guitar buying.

My first site was recording equipment (before I understood keyword research) music gear is crazy competitive. And, as a musician, why buy online? Guitar Centers and Sam Ash are within a reasonable drive for most people and you can touch the gear there.

I chalked my first site up to a learning experience and moved on, it hurt but it was worth it.

ooh i'm doing the exact same thing (but in the UK) see my sig. hope it's not a problem with the niche - i know a lot of people like to try before they buy, but that can be said about other products that sell online.

with respect to your site - remove that header. i deliberately did not choose that theme because it takes up so much vertical space. it's offputting having to scroll to content. secondly the popup ads are VERY annoying - i'd get rid.

Ever thought of just building mini sites for each individual guitars? I like my chances doing that and getting them ranked for the keyword with a lot of searches. I know there are many people out there that say authority sites are better, but I would rather have different types of bait on many fishing poles in the water, rather than one pole with one bait. Sorry, but I love fishing!!

Selling is not the hard part. Marketing is. People buy stuff all the time online. Look at eBay, people buying all kinds of junk. Many people fail online because they don't know how to market.

Who buys guitars? Where do they go to learn about guitars? How do they pick out guitars? Benefits to buying guitar from site A than site B? Benefits of the guitar itself?
What is going to motivate people to buy guitars from you? Extra bonuses?

You have to answer these marketing questions, then come up with a business plan. Without a plan your just wondering around hoping for a sale. How do you want to approach your customers? Do you want to attract them (blogging, video, ebook,SEO)? Do you want to pay for your customers (PPC, Banner Ads, Solo ads)?

Construct a solid business plan, then take action in the order of importance and focus!

Theres plenty of resources out there for free for you to learn from! Don't by tactics! Get a mentor if you have to. It can be your wisest decision!

Here's a little tip - we all know one of the biggest online shopping destinations for physical products is eBay. If you are thinking about selling something physical online but don't know if it is worth pursuing, first go and do your research on eBay. You can search for all completed listings/auctions within the last few weeks and you will be able to see how many of those auctions were sold and how many closed without selling. This is also a great way to see which particular brand or model number is popular and selling well and at which price it is selling.

    Just an idea...

You may want to use the "Power of One" Method:

    1. Focus on ONE Niche.

DO it until you reach a certain desired income.

      To the OP,

To be honest with you, I have no idea how to sell a Guitar. But I can tell you this. To conquer the art of selling you need to learn a system. I have been in the business all my life and I don't know one professional salesperson who does not have a system.

Learning how to sell is a lot like learning to ride a bike. Occasionally, you will fall off, or run into a tree, or a parked car. But you knew you could do it.

You need to master techniques and nurtured them, not for a day or two but for months, if not years. And no two people will learn the system in the same amount of time.

Unfortunately, many people believe there's a shortcut to learning. Well if it is I would have found it by now. The first thing I would do is learn how to respect the customers buying process.

I got into this niche for awhile, had some great rankings for a bunch of different guitars ranging from the super cheap to the super expensive, acoustics and electrics, pedals and amps, made some sales, but nothing compared to other niches I'm in.

I'm a guitar player of 16 years, university degree in classical guitar, made nice vids and had good content, you can sell em but I would focus on something else. Like others have said, musical instruments are just too personal and people like to try them before they buy. It was too much work for too little return.

With your wealth of experience, I think you're definitely going in the wrong direction. Instead of trying to peddle physical products, you should channel all your creativity and passion into either creating your own digital (you could even consider physical as well) guitar and music courses, OR promote some good music/guitar courses with affiliate programs.

I think you'll do well in this area, and with this being an evergreen niche, this is something that could potentially bring you consistent income for a long time to come.

The Top pic takes too much valued space. View a web site as real-estate property. Every bit of space has a "value" just like on a property.

If a pic takes 30% of the page, it must be worth its 30% valuation else the property just lost 30% of its estate value.

Your pic is just a Pic! Words take less space and can add much more value to your property. All that space could of been used for a Killer Headline and more...

Remove top pic and your page will gain in value. The product pic not only moves up, but also has a higher valuation in your case.

Your texts also need to be worked on. There is no call to action either. Enumerate the benefits... etc etc...

    You're Welcome...

To be honest, you need to scrap the site and start again with a new Design, it is unappealing on the eye. Also Guitars are expensive, $40 items sell easily, 100$+ items will give you a lower conversion rate. • Don't waste money on get rich schemes. In the end they only work because you took the right actions and action.

I realized this a while ago (and I'm a noob so feel free to discredit me if you disagree but I'm sticking with it). Having a book that says make a million dollars isn't necessarily going to make you a million dollars. Making a million dollars is solely based on hard "Efficient" work.

Put some buying text links in between content as well. Use call-to-action images will be better.

To be honest with you, you should really change your theme. The Header takes up your most valuable space. You should be ablet to fit a snippet of a blog post and your opt-in box above the fold but your header is stealing your most valuable real estate.

Also, when you change your theme, you want to have your sidebar on the right, so that you can put your offer/opt-in form on the top right area of your page. This will help with conversions.

If you get stuck not knowing what is a good header, stick with something very plain, and make sure your header doesn't go over a height of 1000 pixels(my rule of thumb)

Hope this helps. Keep us posted.

Your site header's just a little too big, in my opinion, and you should consider adding an opt-in subscription form to your site so that you can follow up with subscribers.

You should also try to have some on-site SEO optimization - how are you currently driving traffic to your site at the moment?

your first picture seems to redirect to some kind of asian sex site this would immediately put me of buying anything from your site, also I think your site is not focused enough on the selling of the guitars to many distractions, but that first redirect is a killer blow for your sales

  • Guitars are for a specified group only and so the demand in the market is not that huge. It needs a lot of traffic for a single sale. You need to be vigilant about your rankings. You can do it.
