How do I color the background of pics

I need to be able to add color to the background of pics I use in my blog headers. I make my own headers with xheader, but the pics I use from whatever affiliate offer I am promoting, usually have a white background.

If the header I am making has a color, and they usually do, the pics with the white background look tacky.

Is there an easy way to add color to the pic background, so it will blend in with the header? Free would be nice, because I am tired of buying software, but I will if necessary.

Also any suggestions on who makes nice headers, and ebook covers for a reasonable price?

    You really need something like Photoshop if you are going to get serious about creating your own graphics. The only free software program I can think of that would do this would be something like: GIMP

    Open it up in Photoshop, duplicate the layer and hide the original background, use "Select Color Range" to select the white background, delete it and save as a gif or png. Simple.

    If the background of the pic is white, click on your image and select 'white' from the colour box in X Header, and then click the 'use transparency' check box just underneath. I didn't know this till someone else asked, but when I checked it out, it worked.

      In Photoshop:

      1. Duplicate the image and delete the backround layer.

      2. Highlight the color you want to get rid of with the magic Wand tool. You will see the checkerboard in that spot when the color is removed... that means it is transparent.

      3. Save the file as a PNG. The background color of your site will show through the transparent part of your image.

      Actuality, no echo. Just refinements. For example, some people like the steps spelled out. Also, GIF files have transparency, but I have taught Photoshop on the college level and I would recommend for a number of reasons that people use PNGs instead of GIFs, except in one case.

      It may be helpful to the OP to get a little perspective. There is more than one way to do things.

    Send me the pics through WF and I can work out a price, I may be able to do it for free, it's just christmas is coming up and I can't wait for prezzys () and my family coming round so I won't get much time at the computer.

    As a brief overview -

    I'll remove background of pics
    Copy them onto your header graphic in the place you want.
    Send them back.

    I highly recommend downloading the trial version of Photoshop before paying a lot of money for something you might find to hard to learn. Photoshop can have a high learning curve if you have no or little image editing experience. So download the trial and use for 30 days to see if you think it's for you, then if you feel comfortable you can pay the $649 for the full version.

    Photoshop is a bit pricey though.

    Below is a free SW app I use for all my photo and graphics editing. And the "help/support" available for it is pretty good. You can definitely set the background color of pics to transparent pretty easily with this. It's also very handy in modifying the "canvas" size of your pics, so you get more uniform images, for example when posting several product photos.

    Try rendering it again by using the path tool and clicking the sides of the images. after clicking it, right click then make selection path, then CTRL + X it then paste to the new layer with the new color. To put the new color, the simply use the gradient tool or the paint bucket tool. Hope i help.
