CB Vendors are literally GETTING STOLEN of Thousands of Dollars...

Here's How.

I was going through one of the posts at an SEO forum and there I found MANY such cheaters actually discussing their steals and HOW they duped so many CB Vendors...

If you're a CB Vendor, then read this:

Do a G search for : *****:******** (cannot show it for privacy purposes).

The tragedy starts from the 3rd page of search results, where you'll find that google has indexed many Vendor's Download pages, and there is NO check on unqiueness of the visitor, and anybody can just download anything.. That's just pathetic..

Vendors, if you're spending SOOO much time creating, marketing, advertising your product. Then can't you put some checks on your download page?
Even more amazing is : You'll find a few Ewen Chia's products lying around there as well...

Here is a proposed solution:

1) Create a 'robots.txt' file.
2) Enter the following code in it :
User-agent: *
Disallow: /YourThankYouPage.html
Disallow: /AnyOtherDownloadDirectory/
3) Save and upload it to your site's root..

Although this is the simplest way, I would also recommend to put some check on the Download Page itself.. You can do that in 10 minutes.. let me know if you need the code for that.

Thanks for Reading,
Ritoban

Problem there is that people look at your robots.txt file. I am currently requiring people who purchase my CB product to send me an email with their receipt number. I then direct them to a download site for the product.

They don't seem to mind and it has cut the theft out completely.

      True.

But you can protect an entire folder with your robots.txt file. And then create a blank index.htm file in that folder. And then within the folder name your actually download page something hard to guess.

Again this is just another step to take.

There are so many other ways people get stuff though.

And robots.txt files don't stop everyone from crawling at times.

It helps when you know that sending that one email is making you $50. It's not that nad, really. You get an email, you copy your template reply, insert their name and click send. BAM - 50 bucks.

I know what you mean, though. Shame I can't have it automated. After checking my stats, I found that at least one copy of the product was being stolen every day...mostly via Alexa's search engine completely ignoring the robots file.

Yes, but what's to stop buyers from passing on your download link once they get it? You'd have to be constantly changing the download link... manually - wouldn't you?

      Ditto.

I was getting thieved right and left before I installed DL guard.

Now, it's set up so even if I were to post the download links here, you couldn't get 'em (I tested this, and it's true).

Keep in mind that robots.txt files also don't stop people from posting your download URL on forums and other warez websites.

If you really are serious about stopping people from sharing your download page, or breaking in, then you'll need to invest in a download management system, like DLGuard.

A sale or two, and you'll have it paid off. The time it saves you and professional edge it gives your business will pay you back for years to come.

Yeah, DLGuard is the best way to go, but as a quick answer to the person afraid of people checking out your robots.txt file, you can get the same effect by typing just part of the folder/filename.

      Like

      User-agent: *
      Disallow: /fol

Would disallow /folder, folder.html, and anything else starting with "fol" - so because of that, you do have to be a little careful, but most CB merchants only have a couple front end pages anyway, so it's usually not an issue.

99% of theft is people uploading products to torrent/warez/file-sharing sites after they've purchased an item and then insta-refunded it.

Even though protecting download pages is great, keep in mind that the real theft is often actual redistribution of the product.

The multi-billion dollar entertainment industry has not yet conquered this so we should not expect to...this is the reason that most of the big names have moved to physical products and staggered membership info.

Yeah, cuz people who are searching for products to steal can't wait to buy one time offers, lol.

And their products are still being pirated.

CB should offer inhouse DL protection, it's common sense.
If the website owner isn't concerned about protecting his own site, why should CB worry about it?

It sucks, but, on the bright side, most of these people wouldn't have bought in the first place, and if they did, they would have refunded. Sure, they're getting your stuff free, but most of them will never even read it, let alone put it into practice.

If you stop and think about it though, the problem for those selling info products is actually that you completely lose control of your product once the order is filled. As others have pointed out, hiding your download page is only half the battle (and perhaps the easiest part of it).

Unless you want to spring for around $50K or so to Adobe, there's just no way to do any sort of rights management with PDF's. That's why I don't even bother any more - I stick to scripts and software where I can control the problem and disable licenses with refunds and chargebacks.

But, in researching this further, I came across a lot of discussion over the benefit of PDF versus exe type ebooks. But I only found generalizations and no hard numbers, which makes me wonder if anyone has ever tested this.

I know the core argument - people don't like downloading and installing exe's, but they download and install ours every day. It doesn't make sense to me that someone wouldn't download and install an executable file that they paid for and ran a virus/trojan check on.

There is such an easy way to control the distribution of every single ebook when it's in an executable format that it seems worth exploring or re-exploring.
Don't give up on that, Mike. I'd get endless pleasure disabling an .exe on someone who got a chargeback

As has been said and recommended by hundreds of warriors for years, DL Guard is a top product that protects your download pages. But what about when someone is in possession of your products, such as ebooks and software? How can you protect them then? How can you stop your products being passed around and uploaded to warez sites and torrents?

    Well there is a product that prevents this and it has been around for a number of years, a product called;

    White Knight Protector

Many marketers have been using it for ages. Its even recommended by John Delavera...

        Steve,

Because they restrict access. They also facilitate individual tracking of each product sold and they only allow them to be opened by some sort of code that I am too technically inept to understand. However, it is something to do with only being able to open the products on the same and only the same IP address, or something similar, from which the products where purchased. They have an interface that actually allows you, the merchant, to completely lock them, so they cannot be viewed or used, should you choose to do so when you see it being flagged via the interface that it is being used by a machine that does not correspond with the one that purchased it.

Above are two great ideas but from a customers standpoint I am not to crazy about buying something that logs into a server to check whether my copy is legit or not.

Whats happens when that server goes down or company goes out of business?
Any protection systems that claims to allow you to revoke a license requires the software to check with server.

Face it all a cracker has to do is replace the code that checks for this and bingo their goes your protection.

Not saying that you shouldn't protect your protects but not at expense of customer. Microsoft can't protect their stuff what makes you think you can..

This may sound like a silly question, but shouldn't Google share some of the responsibility for the problem? After all, they're the ones putting the pages out for the crooks to find. You would think they could set the robots to ignore anything that says "download".

      Thanks Ritoban,

The thread still has meaning and I've been wondering about a way
to discuss this very same thing without revealing the code to it.

Here's a few suggestions I've got to protect your download pages...
I hope I'm not hijacking the thread by posting this information but
      take it if you will.

      1. Use images instead of text - because there are certain words
that these pirates use to get to your download page.

For exactly what words those are... it's a little troublesome but
I can reveal what those words are ONLY to existing CB vendors.
      Will need a PM though.

If no one wants it, that's fine too.

      2. Use a blog - fill them up with words like "Download link" and
stuff that would usually appear in download pages.

This is setting up the needle-in-haystack strategy where you hide
the actual download link by throwing in a lot of download links to
      other stuff.

The pirate will have to take some effort to find the link that he
wants and if you do it right in your blog... he'll give up eventually.

Besides, this gives you a good excuse to use viral marketing.

      3. Send by email - like what Allen Graves suggested, sending
      it by email.

One way that I'm using is to totally remove the download page...
I send the download link via e-mail and the only people who
can get it are those who join via the list.

One way to encourage people to do that is that I state that
I give free updates/upgrades to the product so they need to
      opt-in.

This helps to build a list as well (an opt-in buyers list is $$$ if
      treated well)

      4. Robots.txt - coding your robots.txt

This is something that I don't really like to do because if you
don't know what you're doing and you make a mistake, it
might cause the search engines to NOT come visit your site
      or index your site totally.

I've seen that happen before with a friend's site. All he did
was to misplace a comma and his whole site was "forgotten"
because the robots.txt tells the search engine robots about
instructions to follow... he had unwittingly told the search
engine robots to never come back.

      5. Use other media - pretty much like the first one of using
      images.

Difference is that you can provide a little more entertainment
value and/or give the impression of overdelivering.

People just like to see more media used to transmit information.
Video or audio will do just fine.

      6. Get DLGuard - Almost everyone here already knows the
power of DLGuard and it's a good way of protecting your products.

If you're selling information products, investing in a good script
to protect your download links is like hiring a good security guard.

A cheap one is like hiring security guards that go to sleep or
slack off when no one's looking. They have some kind of protection
or deterring factor but if someone's intent on stealing and he/she
has some basic skills, he'll get the download link.

Plus, I do believe Sam Stephens updates his DLGuard often...

      Hope this helps.

In the long run, there's currently no way to foolproof 100% downloadable products.

Like previous posts has mentioned, someone can just buy 'em, download 'em legally, get a refund and share 'em outright. Even an email to a list with an attachment is enough to spread 'em.

Protecting download pages at least stops the newbies and those with no money to buy and refund...

Here is the basic Blueprint that I propose:

    1) Create a database and a table with some basic fields like 'name', 'email', 'password, 'invoice', etc..

    2) Use the basic PHP script given by CB to test whether the user has come AFTER purchasing or not. Else redirect them to an error page

    3) Check the database with the values provided by CB, if the user already exists in your database or not. If already does, then show them an error page stating that 'they have been mailed the download link earlier'.

    4) If all is in the Green, then Add the user to the database with values provided by CB, and show them the thankyou page.

Absolutely 100% foolproof. Although, the code needs to be secure to prevent any hacking.. Use md5 encryption(PHP) for password to be safe.

Will build a configurable basic script around this model soon...

Actually that's just one small part of creating a download management script.

Remember that after someone gets to your download page, they can just pass the link around to everyone.

To make it more foolproof you'll need to set the download page and download links to expire after a certain amount of time and certain number of download attempts.

Then you have the problem of links expiring and people wanting to redownload, so you'll need to create an easy to use interface that'll allow the admin to reset download timers and counters, and resend download links.\

And since you need to hide the raw download link (otherwise, whats the point in security?), you'll need to set up a section in your admin area where you can add diffrerent products, set up their real download URL's, and customise other options such as allowing connection to different Clickbank accounts.

Then you need to set up a download script that'll download the file for your customer without ever showing the real download location.

There is a LOT of work in creating a good quality download management system.

These projects have a tendency to grow huge - I know from first hand experience

    cheers

    Hey Sam,
I've thought over that and developed a one page script that only lets a user download if he/she is logged in and successfully authenticated. So, that leaves out the direct link sharing part.

Moreover, even while downloading, the user won't know the folder from where it is downloaded. It only shows the PHP get variables in the URL.

    Sound good?

Or you get DLG and protect your downloads.

And yes...even me as a "pro" i occasionally see "open" files of mine apearing on google.

    1) ALWAYS have an index.html to avoid listing of folders in google. If a site has no index.html it will sooner or later show up in google listing all your folder.
    2) use ROBOTS.TXT and disallow your folders.
    3) Use DLG.

    and dont be dumb:

Dont use "ThankYou.html", dont use YOURSITE.COM/download/PRODUCTNAME.pdf

Just yesterday i saw some example, say someone having a book "googlemoney.pdf"..then PLEASE, PLEASE dont be a dumbo and put it on your site under SITENAME.COM/download/googlemoney.pdf

Do you know that over at the black hat forums every "warez haxor" knows about it.....so it would be fair to actually write it clearly HERE so vendors see where's the problem! It doesnt make sense to hide the information here, IMHO. (Needles to say i know what URL search you are talking about

    Hi George,
I do realize that at the BH forums everyone knows it. But, that doesn't give me the right to disclose it at this WH forum.
This thread was created for Vendors to learn to protect their download links and save their Sales/Customers.

RAP protects your download pages by providing a unique download url for each purchase. You can set the download link to expire at any time interval that you want.

Of course you get all the other "bells and whistles" like integrated affiliate system, oto's, etc.

If people who wanted to protect their products searched around on the Clickbank site as hard as crackers search CB Vendors sites' for the download page...

THERE IS SAMPLE CODE on the CB site that shows how to protect your download page... look under the "vendors" section. Freely available, you don't, I believe, even need to have a CB account.

Nevertheless...Sam's DLGuard is great. My primary client has 3 copies of it! (They are on a variety of servers and niches...)

Okay...returning you back to your regularly scheduled programming...

Can you use DLGuard to protect videos online? Because if they can download the videos then they can upload it to others. But if they view it online it should be no problem. So can I protect the product if I have it online?

I saw that you could do members site, can I have then 1 payment and then they get some login they need to use to see the content?

I'm actually creating a product coming out in January and I was quite concerned about this.
I actually was more freaked about people buying and passing out the DL link.
You really can't stop this unless you want to go through all the headaches around security. For the most part I think people who are buying your product don't really know how to do those major keyword searches in google. That is the simple truth of the matter. Now the ones who do they are not going to buy your product anyway and will go to all lengths to get it from you, maybe buy it and ask for a refund. So honestly if this is stopping you from creating your product don't let it, because the majority of people who buy will buy and be content with what they have.

So lately I have been more concerned on getting the product out there and doing a few no follow scripts.

It is better to have your product out there than not to, because of fear from theft.
Keep working on getting your product made because in the end, that is your toughest hurdle.

      Hi Arsde,

Thanks for your interest in DLGuard!

Yes, you can set a DLGuard membership area to 1 payment, and then your customers will be able to login and view your videos streaming from your membership area.

There isn't a way to 100% protect video files, but this will certainly do a lot to help. It comes under the same theory as protecting PDF's - do as much as you can to protect them (without causing headaches for valid customers).

      cheers

Yes, it really happens. But I can't understand how vendors allow it... The whole thing could be solved by a simple PHP script. Simply pay a programmer a couple bucks and get an authentication script. This way no one without an username and a password will be able to access the download page.
