Offline Business Marketing

I own a service based business.

I would like to market my business online.

There are only about 5 other businesses in my area offering the same service.

I want to take a wordpress theme and build a simple website and do some SEO? How difficult would this be for a newbie???

I have people calling me all the time offering a service that will do this... most around 150-200/month. ..

Because i read so much on this forum, I think i can do it myself for 200$ and not pay it monthly, and ill have control of my website etc....

IS my thinking right or is this completely niave?

It's not out of the question. Anyone can learn to do all that is necessary. My question is, what is your time worth to you? Depending on the strength and number of your competitors, doing it yourself could be more time-consuming than you want.

Without knowing what keywords you'd be trying to rank for, there could be ongoing self-education and ongoing commitment to things like creating content, building backlinks, etc. In other words, it may be more of an ongoing process than a one-time process.

If there isn't much competition, you can probably do it yourself if you're willing to learn what you need to know. Low competition makes it much easier to rank well, but you need to do keyword research to see who your competition is.

You say there are only "about" 5 others offering the same service in your area, but could there be some you don't know about? Could there be others from outside your area marketing to your area via the Internet? Keyword research will tell you that, where just going by what you see and hear in your community may not.

I think you are a bit naive about the kind of work involved. If you can get that kind of service for $150-$200 month, go for it! You can always learn as you go from there, but you'll find it more cost-effective to outsource what you are unable or don't have time to do on your own.
