Questions to ask before buying banner ad space?

Hi everyone

Thinking of buying banner ad space for the first time - I have thought of the following questions to ask to try and determine what/where to buy:

- Is the ad space rental charged on a PPC or CPM basis, or on a flat rate, basic time duration basis?
- Will the link from the banner ad be "nofollow"?
- Prices?

can I ask you more experienced people, what other questions would you ask? The places i was looking to advertise on are small business forums.

I have quite a small budget; do you think its worth going to an ad network?? Not sure if im right here but just as a sort of 'trial run' I thought it might be better to manage it alone without an ad network, just placing banners on one site for now.

You can ask thus they provide a Site wide link from all the pages of their website with do follow link structure because it would help alot for getting targeted traffic for your website.

I'm by no means an expert on this but I would ask the the following

    1) I would ask them about the traffic volume their site receives, I mean there is no point spending good money on advertising if you are not going to see any returnn - maybe check out the alexa ranking of the site first.

    2) What size ad's do they permit, most sites usually sell 125 x 125 and 468 x 60 banner spaces. This is important to know because your banner may be too small or too big depending on what they offer.

    3) I would also ask about ad placement, more often than not banner ad's are positioned in the side bars but I have seen them at the bottom of pages by the footer, I wouldn't want to have my ad hidden at the bottom of the page.

    Hope this helps you,
    Ste.

Just to say thanks very much for the feedback here really helpful!

It was suggested to me to find bloggers with popular on-topic blogs, in my case these will be probably centred around helping small businesses with all things internet/digital related, (the offer wi want to advertise is a cheap entry level website design package) and approach them. Is there anything specific to advertising on blogs, not covered in these threads that i should be aware of/ask?

Make sure they have been around for at least a few months/year, just so they don't fold up or stop posting to their blog.

For example, Blogger is fairly notorious for closing accounts for no particular reason.

Not sure if this answers your questions but the only banner space I have used Google Adwords Image Ads & have averaged about 1 cent per click - i.e PPC. I stuffed the campaign with roughly 10,000 keywords, however most of the keywords were way too expensive to get any impressions. I was averaging about 200,000 impressions & 400 clicks a day. Hope this helps.
