Is this legal? Site consolidating sports rankings.

I have a website that pertains to a specific college sport (volleyball).

There are several magazines/websites that produce a list of national rankings of the top 10-20 college teams and they update these rankings on a weekly basis during the season.

I want to provide on my website a matrix showing all of the various rankings/polls so readers can see all of them in one view on a single web page.

I certainly would cite/show the sources of these rankings and would not alter them in any way.

If anyone here has input on this, things I should know, problems that can be avoided, etc., I'd appreciate hearing your thoughts!

Thanks!

I would imagine all these sites have a little "All Rights Reserved" tag in the footer [I put them in all my sites] and something in their TOS [terms of service] about not using their info without permission. Usually they don't want you to use the info to make money so if you use adsense etc on your site they could go after you that way. If you want to make sure you don't have problems down the road then email them, tell them what you are doing and ask their permission. Some will tell you how to contact them to get permission in their TOS as well.

I'm pretty sure you'd be ok.

I am not a lawyer and this is not legal advice.

The rankings themselves are insufficiently original to fall under any intellectual property claim.

However, the presentation and formatting of those rankings is creative expression.

So you should get the numbers and put them into a matrix of your own design, identifying the source of the rankings in a footnote or citation.

Anything else you might be thinking of doing, like perhaps republishing their exact presentation, you should speak to a lawyer. There are limited rights of the general public to do this, but I am not qualified to explain them.
