Man this has to be one of the worst xmas gifts I have ever been given. I was doing a little bit of work after xmas dinner through the morning. Bout the time I was going to call it quits for the day. My machine had the worst attack it has ever had.

I am not to sure as to where or how I picked up that virus but man was it bad. I was forced to buy systems tools even though I have 2 other virus protection softwares on this machine. One of which is mcafee which I have used since the day I bought this machine. The other was avg.

The only thing I could think of on how I picked up this virus was when I went to that dumb maxmyspeed site just to see what it had to say. Two days later and I can not do a single thing on my machine for a couple of hours. That was unless I paid for system tools which I have no idea how that it even got on my machine.

Although it was far better then the one I picked up about 8 years ago that complete killed the motherboard and the hard drive. Well I was able to salvage the hd simply by reformatting the drive. It was still a quite an expensive fix to start with. Atleast this one only costed me 60 instead of a few hundred.

Anyone have any ideas as to where the virus tool system tool may have came from. Also has anyone else had a similar experience. Anyhow it did fix the problem but I would have rather ran my own scans then being forced to use that particular one. All is well that ends well I guess

In particular I'd recommend a firewall software that allows you to manually authorise each time a connection request to the internet is made. I do this myself and find it extremely useful. Most people would be amazed at how many even legiot programs constantly want to pump out data from your machine all day long.
I actually have three different firewalls running. The windows firewall which really does nothing at all in my eyes. McAfee firewall and spybots search and destroy. I have never had a problem like this before. Anything I tried to open up it would say it was infected and not open the program. I tried to open the task manager to locate the issue and shut it down. I even turned off my modem and router.

Out of the hundred things I tried to regain control of my laptop nothing would either start or work. The only thing that it would allow me to do was buy the system tool software. Which I really did not want to do but was up a creek without a paddle so was pretty much forced to do so. I have absolutely no knowledge of ever downloading it.

Although I have found microsoft placing software on here before. One piece of software they installed was silverlite. Something I have no idea of what it does nor will I ever use it.

I do actually know alot about computers. I built my first computer from the ground up at the age of 13. Granted I may not know all of the techy stuff. I do know how to keep things away and out of my computer. The last one I caught 8 years ago gave me the blue screen of death. I was able to salvage some from that attack but had to re build the machine to do so.

Pete, you need to go here: NEW INSTRUCTIONS - Read This Before Posting For Malware Removal Help - Tech Support Forum and create a profile and then start a thread articulating your problem/issues.

You will have some of the best techs to analyze your machine, detect the root cause of your issue and eliminate the problem. Anytime I have clients with issues on their machines, this is where I send them and these guys have never failed!

Make sure that you follow the instructions to the letter. After your machine is clean, you need to uninstall all of the the virus protection applications you currently have and then install: Comodo Anti Virus and the Comodo Time Machine. Both products are available at no charge.

Once you take those steps, you will be good to go!

I will weigh in on this wonderful topic...

I have had quite a few attacks this year. In the neighborhood of 20 to 30. I have had a couple little things sneak through, but nothing that 'took me out'.

Your friends and family will recommend things. Check the recommendations for the AntiVirus products HERE: AV-Test.org · Tests of Anti-Virus- and Security-Software - The see how your recommended software rates. Click on the 'Certifications' tab, and you will see the results of quarterly testing. Notice that the same product is not always as effective depending on the operating system!

When you are able, move to Windows 7. Find the UAC (User Access Control) and turn it all the way up. It really is no hassel, but will stop most Virus/Malware attacks in their tracks. But you can't just go 'speed surfing' - the act of surfing on the internet without paying attention...

When boxes do pop-up, you should close them with the following KEYS - <ALT>+<F4> - DO NOT USE the White X in the Red Box in the upper right hand corner of the pop-up.

The White X in the Red Box is a 'button' that can be programed to *silently* begin the installation of a software payload and then close the pop-up - and you will *never* see it happen! The pop-up will seem to close like normal, but the damage has been done! YOU have authorized the virus, and now, if you are lucky, the UAC will pop-up one more time protect you. Should the UAC throw up a box asking if you want to install the 'software application' then you should say - NO - and the attach should be over...

There is alot of FUD running around about Windows 7. Frankly speaking, it is one of the most *tested* software products on the planet!

If you use the techniques above, it will really cut down on your infection rates.

Should you find yourself *suspecting* you may have been caught, immediately - that means Right Now - reboot your system, press the <F8> key every 1/2 second to get yourself into SAFE MODE with Networking.

NOW bring your AntiVirus/AntiMalware product to the fight. First, update the signature file. Now perform a quick scan.

Scanning at any time without using SAFE MODE is a waste of precious time. It's been over a decade now that Virus technology has relied on Stealth technology. It loads with your operating system and hides behind/within valid processes.

This is how you get recurring infections over and over. The fact is the virus/malware was never really cleaned... And SAFE MODE is the secret weapon.

I use and recommend AVAST and MS Security Essentials (recently upgraded to V2) at this time. MS Security Essentials is the only FREE for Business Use AV software that I know of.

For malware, it's MalwareBytes.org for me. There are others that come highly recommended, but I just haven't had the time to test everything!

That's the short version... but I hope that helps you out!

I use all of this stuff. I check for updates at least 2 times per week, and run scans with each at least once a week.

    MalwareBytes
    Threatfire
    AdAware

Those are 3 of the best free programs out there for nuking viruses. Malwarebytes has been tested and shown to outperform most paid software, according to both Cnet and PC magazine.

    Best paid firewall IMO is
    Zone Alarm

ClamWin is the antivirus I use. Used to have AVG but they recently lost a lot of credibility with a faulty update that caused some systems to have critical errors on reboot.

Spybot is also good which you mentioned. However there are threats that it can't catch, and Malware gets em all.

Threatfire is good because it monitors all outgoing connections, so if something has planted on your drive, the moment it tries to connect you get a massive warning from them. That catches a lot as well.

Sorry to hear about your crash. Nothing nice about that.

Try using Deepfreeze ( it is a software that after you restart your PC, the condition of your pc is still the same from the first day you installed deepfreeze ) Just make sure that you must have a location where you can put all the important things that you need after freezing your local disk.
