This is old but oft neglected advice: Back up everything frequently! I just had one of my Hostgator sites hacked, and they deleted the main directories, so nothing shows up any longer. I thought I had done a complete backup more recently than I had, but I lost 8 posts on the primary site, and a few site changes. I have all the posts saved locally, so restoration won't be too difficult. Unfortunately, I had put another site in there as an addon domain, and I lost all of that one. I have all the content saved locally, but will have to reconfigure the WP over again.

It seems that the site was hacked as a nice Merry Christmas present, since it happened sometime late Christmas evening. Hopefully no other Warriors suffered a similar fate.

Takeaways:
Only don't back up what you can afford to lose.
Use the Google cache to recover anything you don't have. It had visited my site the day before Christmas, so that was a nice snapshot.

  • We back up hourly, daily, weekly and monthly. Then once a week the last main back up is taken off site so that should the server building burn down we don't go out of byusiness. Your hosting company should be able to probvide a similar service.
