I've got a problem with my web host, has anyone else had similar problems?

Hello

I'm working with a gentleman and I've use Wordpress as a platform for a website I've built him.

As most of us know, we need to permalink our pages in an SEO friendly fashion and Wordpress achieves this by utilizing the .htaccess file.

If the .htaccess file isn't allowed in the server configuration, the permalinks simply won't work and you get a page not found (404) error.

Now, I believe my client's web host has a bad server configuration. However, it's been 8 days now and they (the hosting company) haven't done ANYTHING to fix it despite me constantly e-mailing them. They reply with instructions on how to use the .htaccess file instead of telling me that they looked at the server config and there is definitely something wrong or nothing wrong.

They're convinced there is nothing wrong on their end that could cause the .htaccess file to not work. I know that there is in fact something wrong with the server configuration.

Now, I'll suspend my certainty for a moment and ask for a second opinion on the matter. Has anyone else had a problem with the .htaccess file not working AT ALL when their web host is telling them that the .htaccess overrides are allowed. I'm using Wordpress.

It is imperative that I can use the .htaccess file so I can make SEO-friendly permalinks and implement geo-location information via .KML files.

Back up your htaccess, then copy a working htaccess to that site. That will eliminate one problem.

I think the problem is on their end, and they think you are a schmuck that will give up if you are ignored long enough.

If the host is on a windows server, that could be the problem as well, since there are permissions problems on most windows servers that fate Wordpress to the always broken status.

      Thanks for the quick response.

Yeah I did some more troubleshooting and I now know for a fact that the .htaccess file just isn't working.

I've eliminated just about every other problem. I can't say for certain what the OS of the server is.

I think you're right, they just don't take me seriously which is horrible business practice.
