How to write articles that convert views to clicks

I'm helping my cousin build a niche site and this is something that I wrote for him, so please feel free to mention anything that I remembered to forget ;-) These are just the tips that work for me.

Note: To avoid starting the battle over article length, I believe there are two methods: Shorter articles to get traffic quickly and longer (800 words+) articles for residual traffic that get republished. You have to ultimately make your own decision.

Keys to Writing an Effective Article that Converts

• Make sure that your title is interesting and engaging: '3 great ways to make your own free dog food' is better than '3 recipes for dog food'

• Keep paragraphs short and easy to read! 5 sentences at most for a 400 word or less articles, this will give the reader an impression that your article is easy to read

• Try to create a 'slippery slope' with your article. This means ending each paragraph in a way that leads the reader into the next paragraph. Ways to do this include ending a paragraph with a question (are you ready for the next step?) or hinting at something in the next paragraph.

• Make the article easy to read! If it's a list style article, use numbers and bold the sub-headings. Separate paragraphs where it makes sense and make the article as clean and organized as possible.

• Read through your article when it's done. Does it deliver on the title? If not, start over. If it does, make sure that there aren't any mistakes and that it flows well.

• Always put quality information, and always leave about 25% out. The idea is that they'll like your article and will click through for the rest of what they're looking for.

• Try to make your resource box blend into the rest of the article as much as possible, and always mention the benefits of your freebie in your resource box.

Hope it helps, please share any tips that you have!

    Great tips!

I have been having trouble with the resource box part of article writing, I feel I'm good a 'selling my link' but I'm not sure I'm making it blend with the article.

Do you have an example of this?

I was thinking you use the resource box almost like your closing paragraph? Would that be more of what you're looking for?

If you are using ezinearticles.com, which is the best article directory, you can put a link within your article after the second paragraph. You can actually make the hypertext something that is enticing so an example would be if you are writing an article on writing articles:

One of the best ways to write articles is to make sure that you know what you are talking about, because if you hire people who don't know what they are saying, this will show through to your potential prospects and your article is the first impression that they get of you, so you'll want to make your first impression count. That is how to make converting articles. When you follow these instructions, you'll be golden. yadda yadda

That's only if it is a non-self serving link. The self serving links are only allowed in the bottom third of the article and in the resource box and those are the links we are after.

Also, an additional tip would be to make sure your first paragraph has enough sizzle to it in order to keep the visitor otherwise you lose them before they even make it through your article and to your resource box. Plus you waste the work performed by your article title obtaining the visitor which is a huge part of the battle for visitor superiority.

Example (if the article was to try to get traffic for you as a writer and the topic was writing converting articles. Ironic, I know):

The last tip to writing an article that converts well is to ensure that your resource box blends into the article as well as possible. It should fully explain the benefits of visiting your site without sounding like an ad, but it should also subtly explain how the reader's problem will be solved by visiting your site (this means understanding the keyword that you're targeting). Unfortunately, this can take some time and traffic to master.

      If you're short on time and want to learn quickly or would just rather leave it to people with practice, yoursitehere has a free resource box writing report and writers available. Of course, you can also just write 10-20 resource boxes yourself; you'll get better before you know it! {end example}

I actually try to make the link in my resource box seem helpful, not like it's my site. Also, I suggest an alternative (but make it sounds awful) so that it isn't as blatant. Does that help?

wow! those two posts just opened things up for me quite a bit, thanks guys. That seems to help both the reader and the writer for SEO as it allows you to use your anchor text more fluidly.

Its good to know about the body link as well I'll have to try utilizing that this week in some articles.

I have to be honest that I almost never use that link. The reasons that i never use it are:

      1. Can't be self serving, so
      2. It has to be to somewhere else.

I just include that info in the article. You're already competing with the article directories adsense templates for clicks, I don't want to compete with myself :-/

thanks that saves me from making that mistake.

That is what I like about Hubpages though, I can have those self serving links in the body and in context and it makes everything flow better.

The link in the article CAN point to your site, I've got mine set up that way and they work. I invite you to try it, so there is no limitation. I make my links nofollow, which who cares because google still counts it anyway and you DO get credit for it.

Actually, that's not true. From Editorial Guidelines For Submitting Quality Articles To EzineArticles.com :

Maximum of (2) "Self-Serving" active or inactive links/URLs to a website that you own, control, or have an interest in.
Maximum of (2) active or inactive non-self serving links/URLs to a website that you do not own, control, or have an interest in which adds value to the article.
Confine your self-serving links to your RESOURCE BOX.
We do not accept articles with active or inactive links in the first 1-3 paragraphs. Please put your active links in the resource box below the article body. The article BODY is your "GIVE" and the RESOURCE BOX is your "TAKE."

It could, just not according to ezinearticles terms of service. What you're doing is breaking their rules, but getting away with it.

How do I know this? I've had articles not accepted because of links in the body that were interpreted to be links to my site. Some brilliant employee thought the links were pointing to my site as self-serving links and said it was not allowed. I knew the rule already and pointed out to him that the links were obviously not mine as I linked to a huge corporation that certainly was not paying me for a little article on their site (I linked to espn.com, can you believe they thought that was my site?!) and he finally understood it and approved the article.

With ezinearticles.com, the only self-serving links to your site allowed are in the resource box.

edit: Looks like Zeus66 scooped me on the explanation, and with a link.

Both of you, I just checked my ezinearticles account, here's how I'm doing it so anyone who reads this can copy it.

actually my link was after the 3rd paragraph and it was a "nofollow" pointing to my blog, which is self serving, then my resource box was pointing to my squeeze, which is self serving. The blog is a different url.

If you want your hard earned articles to help you while utilizing the internal link, which is A HUGE advantage, have that link to your blog or even a youtube video of yours. So it can be self serving, just not the EXACT SAME URL.

When I started applying this, my clicks dramatically increased. My articles are accepted each time without a hitch.

Yes - that is a good technique and makes more sense, the link is allowed because it is in the bottom third of your article (below the fold). Although EZA prefers links in the resource box you can have one in the bottom third or below the fold portion of your article.

Those are great tips, Sean! You clearly know what you're doing.

I like another tactic that seems to bump up CTR sometimes...

Come up with 4 or 5 tips or ideas on the topic, but write the article with a title that promises just 3. Make good on the promise of your title, of course, but mention in the article that there are actually a couple more tips/ideas that round things out or make the point you're trying to get across much more useful. Use that to lead into your resource box and you'll get more click-throughs.

On this, I would like to add something. I think it really should depend on the the purpose of the article.

If you're writing for direct traffic only, this approach works well. I either suggest writng the resouce box as an extention of the article and working it in like a last paragraph (as illustrated above), or being very short and direct (e.g., "To learn solution click here now"). Not everyone agrees with me on this one, but sometimes this works better than the other, just depends on the article.

However, that's not why I'm posting.

When you're trying to write for syndication, I suggest completely avoiding this approach all together. My experience has shown me that webmaster and newsletter/ezine owners are turned off by call-to-action resource boxes, and prefer them to look more like an actual About Author box (similar to the boilerplate on a press release). I have had much better luck getting articles syndicatd with bio-style resource boxes, and have rarely (maybe never) had an article syndicated to a quality site using the other style. Of course, you still want to promote your link, just have to do so more elegantly.

I know people always say, "no one cares about you, never write about yourself, just call to action, blah blah balh", but when writing for syndication, I disagree.

Well, I like my account at EZA, so no thanks. You're obviously breaking their TOS. Good for you for getting away with it, but if/when they find it, it'll go bye bye. It's very clear - you're not allowed to post a self-serving link in the article body. The nofollow part is irrelevant as far as their TOS is concerned.

      John,
I think they (EZA) allow some wiggle room with that rule similar to the anchor text rule. The tend to show a bit of latitude and flexibility to folks when they provide a longer article with higher quality content in it.

Well, you have a little competition because there is actually one author above you. However, I did check out your articles and they look really informative and it is as I thought. Your anchor text link is below the fold.

Quite a bit of articles you have submitted in regards to yoru niche. How is the traffic generation working out for you with them?

Also, John is on of the good guys and by the TOS of EZA he is correct. I was quoting an old rule they had in place so very possible they are not strictly enforcing their actual TOS to the letter.

Tim G, the traffic is great and I appreciate your comments. John is right in the terms of service, and so are you, however I judge how I write the articles by what the good folks down at ezinearticles allow. If they don't like something, they tell me.

It's interesting that there are a few people who try to chase off people like me who offer real value.

The rare times I post, a lot of people love my posts, however there are people that can't stand that and they get their other buddies to try to harass and push away people like me. I hope you are not one of those people.

I am here to offer value and help as many people as I can because I make enough money now that I feel I can give back to those who are newbies and who are struggling.

Both you and John and his other buddy are all fine with me as long as we work together and not argue, this does not set a good example for actual newbies and that is why a lot of people are turned off by these forums.

As it turns out you are also correct because EZA does not want links in the first 3 paragraphs.

So we are all on the right path to what can be done with an article.

Below is the actual section TOS we are discussing for anyone else interested:

WEBSITE LINKS/URLS There is a total limit of (4) active or inactive links allowed in the article, which consists of both the BODY and the RESOURCE BOX.

            1. Maximum of (2) "Self-Serving" active or inactive links/URLs to a website that you own, control, or have an interest in.
            2. Maximum of (2) active or inactive non-self serving links/URLs to a website that you do not own, control, or have an interest in which adds value to the article.
            3. Confine your self-serving links to your RESOURCE BOX.
            4. We do not accept articles with active or inactive links in the first 1-3 paragraphs. Please put your active links in the resource box below the article body. The article BODY is your "GIVE" and the RESOURCE BOX is your "TAKE."
            5. We do not accept links that use HTML to add style attributes to the link, URL, or text link description.
            6. We do not accept links formatted with Smart Quotes by using MS WORD.
            7. We will auto format valid URLs included in your RESOURCE BOX.

              Example of an invalid URL:

              Your-Company-Name.com
News & Ezine Strategies For Email Newsletter Publishers & Permission-Based Email Marketers

              Example of a valid URL:

News & Ezine Strategies For Email Newsletter Publishers & Permission-Based Email Marketers

We will NOT auto-format URLs that are included in the BODY of your article.
            8. Your links MAY NOT contain a file to be downloaded of any type.
            9. We do not knowingly allow any URLs in any of our articles that are banned by Google or if your website engages in questionable SEO practices -- we may reject your articles.
            10. We do not accept articles that have the same ACTIVE link more than once. Do not submit duplicate URLs.
            11. We do not allow articles which have strategic keyword anchor text links in the body to your domain that do not add informational value to the article. Any use of anchored text links to websites that you own should add value to the article topic rather than stand out as an obvious abuse of anchored text link. The goal with this policy is to be a good net citizen by only allowing articles that add value with the anchored text links rather than for pure SEO reasons. Please limit your anchor text link length to 3 words in an article that is less than 400 words and 5 words in anchor text if your article is more than 400 words.
Note: Common words are excluded from this word count. Those include: to, is, in, on, it, and, at, by, a, an, for, of
Example: Within your article, you link the word "bird dog" to an article that you wrote about bird dogging. This is a good example of an anchored text link vs. linking the same text to your home page as it doesn't really add value.
