IM And Formal Education - What Do You Think ?

Hi,

We've all seen a lot of people online including warriors who went from nothing to clickbank best sellers, and many of them took their businesses into the next level and open offices and hired a full time staff and got into other business models ...

But the question that i usually ask my slef is, where does education take place in their success ? was it an important part of it ? or maybe it wouldn't make any difference if they had some kind of business education or not ...

What do you think guys ?

Personally i think that making 6 figures online is very achievable by any person by enough dedication and self deciplent, but if that wasn't enough for you and you want to go big into the 8 and 9 figures then you can go for it, but a business education would help you a lot, specially if you have this sense of seriousness about your business and not doing it as a hit and run kind of thing .

You know it was funny, I was thinking the other night "They should teach IM as a subject in college". Really they should. Except the technologies and strategies are so fast-evolving I'm not sure that the colleges could keep up with the latest strategies.

They'll still be teaching keyword stuffing.

You actually brought up a very important point that i didn't think about ... which is the speed of changes in the industry, which is so true because there is no way college can keep up with that ... lol

But what i meant is a basic business knowledge and not learning IM in college, but great point though

IM = marketing on the internet.

Marketing is already taught at college.

Much of what we do online has already been established offline for years.

    Sales letters. Check.

Newspaper ad's. (Much like adwords) Check.

Affiliates and Joint Ventures. (These words have been in the corporate world forever)

Prospect lists/Buyer lists. Before email it was physical addresses.

Outsourcing. Yeah - hiring employee's have been around a while.

But like any other skill or knowledge, it can be gained without a "formal" education. (I mean, what exactly is "formal" when it comes to knowledge?)

There have been a few discussions about this topic.

    Follow your heart.

If you want to make money and become educated, then do it.

You do not need the BA or MBA to succeed in IM or take anything
to the next level, and the next...

Improvements don't happen in the blink of an eye. Colleges would be able to teach the curriculum for the current year/semester/quarter/whatever and then change it the next time around. They teach computer classes in college, don't they?

I think that Internet Marketing would take less than 4 years to get a degree. Possibly a 2 year degree. I know that I would be very interested in taking IM classes. I started out a computer science major and then changed because it was so boring. I think that IM would be more exciting to learn.

Even though some people without high school educations have done great financially, I think that they are the exceptions, not the rule. Education is tool to use. I enjoy being well educated and I don't see why other people wouldn't enjoy that education.

I hate the fact I wasted 3 years in college. I would have been much happier not going at all and immediately jumping in starting an online business.

But, like I have said before, education comes from more places than just college.

I would like to think that I know a thing or two about business. Not much. But enough to obtain success for myself.

And I didn't discover anything at college that helped me with my business.

In fact, I failed quite a few of my classes, mainly due to non-attendance and lack of care for homework, study, and the like.

I wasn't saying that college = education. Education comes before college. Read a newspaper. Read articles online. Learn about the world around you. I feel that is how I educated myself the most. By teaching myself.

Could have learned time management, hard work, etc. :p

I work hard and can manage my time well - if I care about what I'm doing.

I didn't give a crap about a majority of nonsense I had to take in college.

Case in point - I took a psychology class, as required by my chosen degree. We spent most of our time talking socialism and why people who are socialist tend to be "smarter" and more psychologically mature.

          I'm not even kidding.

Talk about using "education" to push a political agenda.

Several other classes where taught by recent college grad's (from my college) who couldn't find a job. The math instructor teaching statistics (he graduated with statistics degree, hoping to work in research. Now he just spits back out what he learned), a music business instructor (who taught business "law". Yeah work that one out), and a speech professor who has never spoke in public.

          Enough said.

I agree. Real world education > college.

Not to say that college is a bad thing. Because I went and graduated with a business degree, but pretty much use nothing. The best thing that came from college is my network.

I wouldn't say that I'll never go back, because I do want to be a professor one day, but I'll wait until Im sitting on a few million before I pursue that and by then my Alma Mata will probably give me an honorary degree anyways once I achieve what I'm going to achieve.

  • I majored in business. Never used any of that theoretical mambo jumbo in my online business, and I make way more money than all my university mates. That speaks a lot about my opinion in formal business education...

Failure is the best teacher. I've been in this game a while, hit a few base hits, a few home-run affiliate campaigns, and struck out a LOT. But all those failures and the base hits I hit have gave me a clarity and brevity you CANNOT buy ANYWHERE.

My plan for 2011 is so focused and clear now because of all the things I wasted time and money on, I know exactly what not to do, exactly what I am good at, what I need to outsource, how to cold call and get things from strangers, and how to raise money. There is nothing other than failure that would have taught me these things!
