I want to start a DIFFERENT type of blog.. Just like TMZ (different niche)But.. How do they make $?

Yes I said it. I want to start a blog that isn't based around a product!!

I'm starting to lean more and more away from promoting products and doing all of the boring stuff to actually making websites about things I enjoy and like to write about.. and looking for ways to make money from them.

So I want to start a blog like TMZ, except it just won't be about celebrities.. (tmz.com)

If you don't know, TMZ is the biggest celebrity gossip blog out there.

Anyways... Where are they pulling their money from? I see that have some little ads in between some posts.. That can't possibly be it?

I understand I could sell some banner space or something if my blog were to hit a certain point...

But without actually promoting a sole product(which I don't want to do).. Are ads your only income? And if so.. I guess depending on the size of your fan base... Ads could make you a lot of money eh?

They are also a TV show.

Most likely they get direct advertising from companies.

Advertising on website. Selling the show to TV stations (syndication). And selling their video and pictures to other news outlets.

I think TMZ does have a lot of ads though and for big bucks too - and I've always wondered if agents pay to have their clients 'talked' about.

But if you have a strong niche that has a strong following you can build the same thing. Look at sites like mashable etc - basically a blog for people who love to read tech/social media stuff.

But they also have several arms in other fields too. I think they've got a few sister companies but for the life of me I can't remember what they are. If you look at their ads you'll find some are for their sister companies and not third parties.

But ad sales can be big if their is a consistent following and a prominent one.

      .
I had a photographer friend who quit shooting bands and got into the whole paparazzi thing

She is actually on a list (I think you pay each year to be on it) and the movie studios and star's publicists will send daily updates on say, where Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are going for dinner that night etc - so 95% of the time when these people get their photo taken - the photographers are given a heads up on to where the "stars" are going to be.

One photo of say a movie star cheating on their spouse or getting into a brawl can net the photographer and/or their agency HUGE amounts of money.

Yes I had heard of this being the norm where paps are concerned but I wondered if agents/managers would pay a site like TMZ or Philton money to just talk about these celebs.

Doesn't seem too much different than sponsoring a blog. I get some of those offers sometimes in my niches.

As long as they have the disclaimer, there shouldn't be much of a problem if they take money for covering particular stories or celebs. It isn't like you can say "I saw it on TV or the internet - it must be true".

Its just PR. And there is no reason why you can't do it, if you wnat to. Peopl efind my niche sites on a fairly regular basis and send me emails asking me if they can sponsor my sites. As long as where they want to link is related to my constituent market and i wo't be ashamed later, I usually say OK.

And for the most part, the folks who contact me seem pretty aboveboard.

So basically they can contact you and say.. "hey, we'll pay you $xxx amount every so often for you to cover X and X on your blog"

            Something like that?

Sometimes they do that. Sometimes they want an endorsement or a review. Sometimes all they want is a link.

That is how it is with my markets. I do not work much in the Google trends kind of markets. I prefer evergreen and growing, but that is just me.

If you are covering newsy type things on a steady basis and you have a persona that fits in the news arena, I would be surprised if you don't get contacted.

Lots of PR folks ignored social media for a long time, pretty much until Betty White got on SNL. Whether that was a real grass roots thing or not, I do not know. But it put socila media on the map for publicists and PR types of people.

I would say as long as what you have to say on your blog is newsworthy for the niche you are targeting, honestly newsworthy, in a niche where people really want news, I would think some peopl ewill find you.

Two of the best things I ever did were write until I became Platinum Author on EZA and install the contact form 7 plugin on my WP sites.

I have people who subscribe to my feeds on EZA, which is pretty cool, and I made it easy for them to contact me.

TMZ is very plugged into the Hollywood scene. You'll need to figure out what type of entertainment news items you can provide that will appeal to a certain group of people.

How is your site going to get much needed buzz?

Start thinking about establishing relationships with people who have inside knowledge in this niche. Maybe you can contact some established bloggers in this area and ask if they can do guest posts in exchange for links.

It sounds like you are passionate about this so good luck.
