Spill the beans and give me the dirt.

It's time to expand.

Anybody using SMS marketing?

I'm in learning mode (and you should be too).

Early impressions, it's kinda spendy.

    Still learning.

I can see the potential, but as always, I have too many things that seem more important than to dive right into it.

SMS marketing is so 2009. Even better than SMS marketing now is Proximity Marketing, when for example someone walks close to a store window and an audio message announcing their specials is played through their Bluetooth device. Real Estate agents especially are prime users of this technology as prospects get close to the home or commercial property, a continous message plays on their Bluetooth or car radio. As smartphone apps come into the market, more options will become available such as GPS marketing. And it will go on and on.

I have heard these stories too.

Some local stores are also sending specials to the customers' phone while the customers are in the store.

SMS has the deepest market penetration, but it is really limited.

Smart phones and Internet-ready phones will let you go further by transmitting images to the phone that are scan-ready coupons that allow better tracking to stores for the stores' marketing activities.

p.s. myob - Cannot figure out who you are, eh? LOL

IMHO SMS combined with mobile websites would be a hit with small businesses that offer daily or weekly specials such restaurants, takeaways and bars.

I would never sign up to be marketed too via sms. The second marketing sms I get I'll unsubscibe. What If I'm taking a nap and you wake me up via sms to buy your product?

Now smart phone apps is where I think it's at for 2011. You can buy PPC ads on a lot of the free apps people have on their phones.

            Cheers

This is my general attitude towards text marketing. Any text ad I've received has been an absolute nuisance.

Another upcoming technology that Google is preparing for a big launch next year is bar code marketing - Mobile Marketing and How to Make The Barcode Hip Again | Own Page One: Search Engine Visibility Blog - Online Marketing Strategy and Tips

There are so many new opportunities that arise with the adoption of this new technology by businesses, and it's only going to be made possible by the widespread penetration of smartphones that are capable of scanning these barcodes.

I don't really get why people would be open to hearing constant advertisements when they are driving/walking around. That's the last thing I would want. People avoid unnecessary advertisements.

Well, as a marketer, you realize (or should realize) these preferences are not about you, but what you have in your marketing arsenal. As I did mention here previously, some or all of these options may or may not be appropriate for all markets right now, but it can certainly help to differentiate from the competition. If you don't learn and start using these tools, others will (and are).

I'm feeling out of the loop. Is this something I should know?

Proximity Marketing sounds really cool but it's not something that is going to do me much good. Great idea for a brick n' mortar shop.

I've got a couple of goofy ideas up my sleeve.

Also, QR codes (scan-ready coupons) advertising is getting pretty hot now too. All this technology is being driven rapidly by the increasing ubiquity of smartphones. Some or all of these options may or may not be appropriate for all markets right now, but it can certainly help to differentiate from the competiton.

Here's a reference to give some basic overview information. And remember also, Google is your friend.

Ive been looking into this a lot lately. Im thinking im going to try and make $$ off of the actual sms instead of using them to dive traffic to my sites at this point but im still in the research mode.

I use a commercial SMS provider for my clients, customers and prospects. You can charge whatever you want over the base rate if you are providing this as a service. Search in google for SMS marketing, and you will find something like 13 million results to choose from.

But to begin any such campaign you have to have an optin subscriber base to send to. There are severe penalties for spamming. What I do with my own customers is to get their cell phone number online while subscribing to an offer, or call and/or visit them later and offer the text messaging updates.

I've learned a few things in my time.

    Don't mess with peoples money.
    Don't mess with peoples cars.
    Don't mess with peoples phones.

I personally doubt SMS will ever take off properly. People take their phones way too personally.
