Compared to search engine PPC ads, social 'interruption' ads will typically get lower click rates, direct reproductions of Adwords ads on Facebook are probably not the most effective approach, a different, more friendly, softer sell approach is probably more effective. People are making it work, though Facebook prohibits some products, it is less complicated than big G. Click costs are lower if your ad landing page is on Facebook, a fan page can be used as a sort of soft warm up pre-sell page.

It depends on what you are selling.

I would not expect it to do well for Internet Marketing, but I could be wrong.

It really depends on how effectively you target the right demographic with the right message.

Many of the people I have heard making a solid go of Facebook advertising are leading people into a sales funnel, via a mailing list.

Yes the CTR is low, but there most certainly is money to be made!

My success on FB has come from building a solid relationship first, then selling. By following internet marketing 101, you can do very well on FB.

Drive traffic to your site with FB Ads. Give away valuable stuff/content. Be an autority. Build a list. Build a relationship with the list. Then sell to the list.

      Hope that helps....

You can advertise to much tighter demographics on facebook than you can with adwords. So the trick with facebook is to just throw a lot of ads up at many different demographics, and then cut the ones that don't convert. Also, ads on facebook have a limited shelf life. So you also have to know when to pull a successful ad, after the conversions start to slow.
