Can I Get A Sanity Check?

Can I just get a quick sanity check on the direction I'm taking?
To summarize my current situation--My IM experience and my site are 9 months old. I do all the basics, many of which I learned here. I have 3 keyword phrases on the 1st page of Google but traffic is still only about 1300 uniques a month, and my list is only about 200 people.

My current plan is simply to concentrate on getting more traffic and building my list. Then I'll start worrying more about selling (I do have video tutorials and an e-book or two of my own, plus I'm an affiliate for a bunch of relevant merchants).

Based on my traffic and list size, do folks here think my direction of just getting more traffic and building the list size is the way to go?

    There are two major schools on this subject.

    School one says "promoting to a small audience is of miniimal value, so wait until your audience is bigger first."

    School two says "promote to your audience now, so you will make fewer mistakes when your audience is large."

    I don't believe either school is more accurate than the other, but I thought you should know the other school exists, at least.
