Another example of why you don't put all of your eggs in one basket

I just came across this article: Duckworks - All boat design is a compromise - Rubbish

This guy was earning about $2600/month from Adsense and got his account closed out of the blue. By the looks of it, it was probably closed because he was encouraging his visitors to click the ads (obvious no-no) and he doesn't seem to understand that's probably what got him, but it still goes to show you that relying completely on any one source of online income is a terrible idea.

I haven't touched Adsense at all yet, and it seems so risky that I don't even think I want to.

Adsense in the beginning is only pennies per click until you are more established with your site.

I don't blame you for not going for Adsense earnings - in the beginning there are none!

I earn a fair amount from Adsense, but it's not my only thing. So like you said not putting all your eggs in one basket is the best idea.

But there's no reason to be scared of Adsense unless you just can't follow rules. But if you can't follow rules, then honestly you're going to have a hard time with a lot of stuff.

I build sites and do put Adsense on some of them along with other ads (affiliate ads and CPA ads). I like to earn money from a variety of sources from one site.

I've never understood why so many people think they're just going to build an 'Adsense site'. There's plenty of room on one site to put all kinds of good content as well as lots of different ads.

Content publishing is a great thing if you do it right.

I didn't read the whole article, but this guy should put all his videos on his own site (youtube could have pulled the plug on him just as easily as Adsense, so he was on real shakey ground to begin with).

Then replace all the videos on youtube with shortened versions, like 30 seconds long, and a big "visit this URL" at the end and at the bottom of the whole thing. Then put some generic CPA ads on his site; like 'win a free ipad' or netflix, just something that would appeal to his demographic.

He could probably salvage most if not all his earnings. Later on if he was willing to learn even a little SEO he'd probably make more than what he was earning from youtube Adsense revenue sharing.

Too bad the gentle man lost his earnings but I really dont think adsense is the problem, I think the problem with most of us is that we cant follow simple instructions and more so, we dont read the fine lines of the agreements that binds us. This is very important. It will save us time which is the most valuable thing and hard earned dollar which is the result of hard work.

      He says in the post:

"Oh yes, I was also running little blocks of adverts provided by Adsense and, yes, I told my subscribers that I got some money if they visited the websites of those advertisers – all of whom were interested in selling stuff to sailors."

"I allow my subscribers to leave comments on the films. If one of them mentioned clicking on adverts to show their appreciation – well it’s a nice gesture, but I would edit their posting to remove the mention."

He clearly did not read the T & C. The ads were not converting, he got moved onto smart pricing and then booted off. At least it is not a total loss, he still has subscribers to the site and earnings from Amazon (I am sure it will be perfectly ok if he encouraged people to shop at Amazon).

Well the guy would have been fine with putting his eggs in the Adsense basket if he didn't break the rules. For example can a drug dealer be upset that his stash of weed was found by the police because he was speeding and drawing attention to himself? Would you tell him he shouldn't have put all of his eggs in one basket too?

Don't forget to promptly deposit those checks, regardless of who they are from.

I've been an Adsense publisher literally since the 1st day they made it available to us, and I've never worried at all about losing my account. Hundreds of sites later, I've had exactly one run-in with Adsense and it was over something they changed on their end that pertained to one of my sites and was in no way a TOS issue. The lesson is, read the TOS when your income is in any way dependent on a third party. If you don't, cry to the mirror.

I've lost 3 adsense accounts. Last one was a nice 4 figure a month machine. There was nothing shady , they just didn't like the fact that I had active users who clicked links. I appealed again, lost and wrote off Google Adsense and Adwords.

Heres the thing. From my perspective if my legit traffic was suspicious then from their POV I can't trust Adwords. I've never seen my own adwords bill go down so I dont buy they adjust the money back to the vendor. In googles own words Adwords is rife with clickfraud caused by their own Adsense program.

Google is working too hard to become the next ATT

Yeah everyone should definitely read and follow the TOS of Adsense, Adwords, e-bay etc - I've always done so and I have 100% of my accounts intact with everyone and never any had issues.

Having said that, I don't believe it makes us immune from getting banned, innocent people who follow the TOS to the letter get banned from these services every day.

If/when it happens, most of these services don't give you any comeback.

So while one should do their best to follow the TOS, I do strongly believe it is always wise to diversify as much as possible.

Even if nothing does go wrong, you can sleep much easier at night.

Don't see the point of adsense. It's such a tiny return. Would rather give the space to my own product ads or an affiliate ad via Clickbank or PayDotCom any day.
Did see one tip recently... if you find that your own promotional banners aren't working (no clicks) then use the adsense format (make it look like an adsense ad) because people are used to clicking on them! Anyone already tried this?

Losing your Adsense account isn't a big deal.

Honestly...this guy will make more marketing his own info or affiliate products. As long as he has the traffic, he can test and tweak and find a winning combo.

The main advantage to AdSense is it's easy - you don't have to drive sales, only have to spend a couple minutes posting the code on your site and if you have enough traffic it will make you a decent amount of money. Google is fairly strict with their terms, though, and if you don't follow them you're out.

That said, this guy seems to be using Amazon as well, plus he's selling his own products - and the AdSense ads are still there to boot... I can't see how he's only relying on one income stream, but I understand your point nonetheless!

He had wasted his money. I feel sorry for him, he is not contented on his earnings and want to more. If i was him, even if 1000 per / months is enough to me, now he will be a newbie again like us. Hope he find another job that will give him an earning of 2600/month. OMG

I agree with everyone above, if he had read the rules, he probably wouldn't have gotten banned.

I don't think adsense is a waste of time. It is not pennies if you choose the right keywords and backlink the heck out of your site.

I agree, it is a great way to make money. It takes time and traffic though, most people here seem to prefer the get-rich-quick business model.

I like how he's playing dumb about the whole thing. Everyone knows that you can't beg for clicks and I don't believe for a second that he knew otherwise, especially considering that he was quite experienced with AdSense. If there is one rule Google makes extremely clear it is that you cannot ask people to click your ads, ever.

Playing dumb during his appeal probably didn't help matters and in fact if he had been truthful he might have had his account reinstated.
