Are upsells the same as backends? I think there is a difference in what they are,

upsell = a offer you offer before the thank you page

backend = a offer you offer to the purchaser, after they purchase, with automated email series offers.

Is that correct? and can similar products be used in upsells and backends?

Are wozzles the same as floogles?

    It's just words.

'Upsells' was sort of co-opted from the retail world, where it pretty much meant talking a customer into buying something more expensive than they came there to buy in the first place. They want a tall coffee? See if you can upsell them to a grande, or a mocha.

In IM parlance, I've seen it refer to that, to bait-and-switch type tactics, to point-of-purchase add-on sales, to follow-up sales of any related item, to ANY follow-up sales, etc.

All that really matters is understanding how to handle the different situations. The nomenclature is just trivia.

You also consider your list as a backend. From time to time you will send out offers to your list and a certain percentage will probably purchase.

It's like when marketers teach you to give away a free ebook, video, etc then you can hit them up on the backend. You autoresponder message should be set up to send out regular emails but not everyone needs to be a sale. You also have to give value to your list and make sure they don't feel like you're just using them to market too.

That's what you are doing, but don't make them feel that way.

What % can this typically be? Worse-ish case scenareo (cold/medium list),

and best case screnareo? (warm list, who you have built trust with?)

as some % ? (I know these depend on list source, traffic source, your offer, your sales page, your product price etc)

      - but just rough figures..... % ?

It's hard to give a percentage range because it REALLY depends on how you treat your list and how they feel about you.

I have a set schedule for emails each week. The subjects are news, jokes, funny video's on the net, FREE giveaways, etc. I through in a sales copy about 1 in every 10 emails. So my list doesn't even realize the sale when it comes and they figure it's got some value to it. Not all will purchase but if you've been treating them right you'll no dought have people that respect your recommendations.

There is a fine technicality here. A backend may be offered to someone who has NOT purchased too. (The prospect may have downloaded a free / trail offer.)

The upsell is exactly what you describe in your OP

The front end is what makes you money RIGHT NOW.

The back end is what makes you money later.

So the back end is constantly rotating to the front end, as time goes by.
