Popular Twitter String... What is it?

Hey guys,

First of all, Happy New Years! ;-)

Second, I'm seeing a lot of tweets (on twitter) where the name of a user says "username" played {Game Name} in the last 24 hours". Where do these come from? They have them for all kinds of games... from Halo to Bejeweled Blitz. Is this an app or spam?

Any hints, clues or ideas will help. I can see it comes from a site called Rapr, but really, the purpose and incentive to do this is....??
