Using Porn to Draw Traffic?

Hi, everyone.

Silly question, here. I was thinking about possibly using porn to draw people to an affiliate site, but then I read a blog entry called The Porn Report that said making money from a porn site is more difficult than it's worth, but that's not quite what I'm interested in doing. I'm foolish enough to think I have a different angle on this. I wouldn't be making the site for the porn, per se; I'd just be using the porn to draw traffic and sell products; products related to the porn, btw. I don't even think I'd be charging for the porn, anyway.

Anyway, let me know what you think. Terrible idea or is it doable?

I'm not entering the ethical discussion.

However, you're guaranteed to not make ANY money from this -- they think they're going to get porn and then they hit a site selling them some other stuff, they think "sh*t I'm outta here, where's my pr0n, lets see, ... <insert site X they remember>", and Sayonara.

        @Joe
I DO intend to give them porn. I'm not just gonna SAY I've got porn in my title and/or description and then not have any on the site. That'd be a dick move and it wouldn't get me any money. My plan would be to have the porn there, but have a few affiliate links on each page, too.

        @Chris
Yeah, that's the direction I was leaning. There IS affiliate marketing available for sex toys. Thanks for the forum suggestion. I'll check that out.

It's doable, as long as it's permitted for the affiliate programs you are promoting. However, once you put porn on your site you limit the ways in which you can promote it, e.g. you can't get backlinks through the usual blog networks. If you go that route, then you need to check out forums for porn webmasters and see how they drive their traffic.

What is so "non-ethical" about it?

I made my first huge profits online by being an affiliate for several porn sites and *cough*the occasional webcam show*cough*.

I no longer do it as it is getting harder by the day to makes sales (which I why I'm mainstream now, and here) but there is absolutely nothing wrong with it, morally or socially.

Matters of morality are judgement calls. Unlike "ethics", which are by definition based on some sort of established consensus, morality is by definition a question of individual judgement. That, indeed, is the primary distinction between the two.

I've never understood why people are so amazed that I can think of an answer just about as easily as they can think of a question.

I don't see an ethical problem here, what I see is the OP asking the question on the wrong forum.

PORNWell truth be told..sex sells...plain and simple...As soon as someone sees the word porn eyes shift. It's not moral or immoral. It's a judgement call. plain and simple. If you feel like you have an angle who are we to say you're wrong. if you are doing it for other reasons...who are we to persecute you? To each's own..I rest my case.

That statement is made out of a moral view. It comes down to your morals. If you believe it is worth degrading women and men to drive traffic then it is completely moral and ethical. On the other hand, if you think degrading women and men is unethical or unmoral, then it will be unethical or immoral to you..

But, it is not some clear-cut "ethical law" it comes down to the ethics and morals instilled in you.

Please do not interpret that as I am saying you are unethical or immoral. That's not for me to decide.

You are implying that whether or not we think it is moral, that it is absolutely "degrading." You need to make sure you let it known that it is your personal opinion that it is degrading -- because it surely isn't mine.

But, I agree with everything else you said. I like these type of conversations.

Probably because you're using porn, which is totally unrelated to IM, to drive traffic to an IM affiliate program.

To be truthful about it, if I was surfing porn and click on one of your links I would expect something porn related. Not a book on how to improve my SEO ranking, e.g.

If you are smart about it, you can make serious bank. I banked from EPN to the tune of $6-$8k PER MONTH for several months using a form of this strategy. The content wasn't quite porn though and this was before eBay started making all kinds of changes to the EPN program (ie. Commission Junction days).

eBay made changes to its EPN program, rendering the strategy itself useless but the content I used still draws massive traffic till this day whenever I use it.

If I could only figure out a new way to monetize the traffic....

Actually I have no clue who the most visited profile on this forum belongs to. Give me a hint, and then tell me how you can verify it as a fact....

If I were to guess it would be some guy named "Admin" or more commonly known as Allen Says, but I'm probably wrong....

Using Porn to draw traffic would be a major challenge. Do a quick search for any phrase you are pondering and see how many people are competing for it.

Then do a quick search for how many videos you might be able to use and compare it to the volume on the wide array of adult tube sites.

Unless your niche is laser targeted in this arena you are going to face some very stiff competition.

You can of course nibble around the edges and in the crevasses of any niche, including porn if you do the proper research, identify proper long tail phrases, optimize your sites, and get enough quality backlinks. Just do not expect overnight success.

Think outside the box. I can generate hundreds, if not thousands, of visitors per day without Google. If you are smart about it, getting the traffic is the easy part. Converting the traffic is the difficult part.

If you can figure out how to convert the traffic, you can, in fact, start making serious money "overnight". I know this because it's exactly what I did years ago.

Really? Should I also mention I only like to play FPS games such as COD? Pffft Men!!!!!

Anyway, a picture is just a picture. Yes I admit, I do attract some crowd but that does not affect my business in any way. Face it, why would a man look at a pretty picture? Is my picture going to make you buy something from me? So the crowd that a picture can attract is not always a worthwhile crowd... Unless I might want to sell myself for "other" services of course.

Used to have a business neighbor right next door. We tried to get him to use our services for stuff, but we only got small jobs. We never even had the opportunity to bid on the larger jobs.

And, I'm sure we could have done a better job on the larger jobs, because I saw what his provider did and we could have produced a higher quality than what he was getting and possibly at the same (or lower price), but we cannot know for sure because we never had the opportunity to bid.

Then, I noticed something about the provider that he used, as well as a number of other vendors he used.

The representatives from the merchants he used were all young... and female.

There is a reason why college cheerleaders are highly sought after for 6-figure jobs by the pharmaceutical industry wanting doctors to prescribe their products.

                  Wait... Hold on...

Are you telling me I can hire cheerleaders?

                  And it's perfectly legal?

Yeah ... but see the fine print, too (you get that in lawyers' posts): you have to pay them 6-figure salaries, apparently.

Well maybe it is just me then: I don't know how to use my look to get anywhere in life if that is all it revolves around... It just shows how this world is so superficial really. Maybe I should have listened to my mother and marry for money.

Ad Age Advertising Century: Icons: Betty Crocker

Along the way, Betty's image was refined to reflect the changing image of women. Over the years she has had eight different "looks," from the first stern gray-haired, older woman in 1936 to today's olive-skinned, dark-haired Betty, a product of computer morphing.

It depends on who you're trying to inspire.

Look at your avatar. You're smiling and biting the end of your finger while reclining on one elbow.

I don't know whether this is what you're going for, but that's an expression I see on women when I'm on my way out of the shower.

So whether you intend it or not, the message I get from your avatar is "you look good naked."

Which is true, of course, so it doesn't particularly influence me. But there are men here who don't see that look very often, and will clamor to buy your stuff just because they like the way you're "looking" at them from your avatar.

Are you sure? Because I get an entirely different message. To me it says, "Ha ha! Stop trying to make me laugh right now--I've got something stuck in my teeth."

OMG! Is that really what my picture say? I honestly thought it was just a nice picture my ex took. The two I used before were an issue because everybody seemed to focus on my decollete... so I thought this one was so much better! Crap! Now I have to look for a picture that is "less" subjective. OMG I use this picture everywhere!

I seriously have to look at my marketing strategies though...

That's what it says to me. Other people have had different responses to it, as you can see above, and what really matters is what your target market sees in it.

And it is a nice picture. But you're looking at it through the lens of what you were thinking when it was taken, and you have more information about that than we do.

I have to fill in from my own experience, and I don't normally see women in that pose unless things are pretty intimate. (In fact, I think every woman I've seen in that pose has been either my fiancee or my wife at the time.) So you have to consider what other people are seeing - not just what was actually happening.

My own avatar is a particularly odd face captured during a video chat with my girlfriend. We have a habit of clipping those frames out and mailing them to each other.

Chances are... if you think that, most men will - unless they are only into blonde skinny white skin girls if you know what I mean.

What worries me now, is what do I portray then to the female crowd? My personal site is just that, personal thoughts and in case people want to know more about me and to show that I am a real person... but it is not my main site and does not really generate any income or has any huge traffic. But I still don't want women to leave my site just because my picture would give them the wrong image of myself?

And my apologies if it seems I am off the original subject...

Caliban has a history of hijacking threads, so no worries. If he's online, any thread is susceptible. People just accept it.

And I'll be the first to say that I am not into blonde, skinny white girls. I've found them to be the most insane when I tried dating them. I prefer darker skin tones.

I also prefer walking alone downtown at night with change jingling in my pockets. It helps me get exercise, and the bums work for their money.

And no matter what you put up, men will sexualise it. We're biologically designed that way.

Goodness - this has gotten silly. What kind of spreads are people putting on their profiles anyway?

@Wurmwood - if you do decide to go this route, some of the more um-darker hat IM forums have specific sub-forums dedicated to this niche. this may be helpful.

I DO have a particular fetish in mind, which is one thing that leads me to suspect this could work.

It soly depends on how targetted your product is to porn/sex. You can't sell mainstream products like insurance or electronics on a porn page. It has to be something tightly related to porn. Like viagra, or penis enlargement, fleshlights(mentioned), and so on.

If you have a non-porno site keep it as is.

You could include sex education with good taste.

Probably artistic semi-nudity could somewhat pass.

If you are promoting locally, be careful to checkout community standards.

What is accepted in one town could be banned in another, and this is not related to what law says, it is what local people accept.

      Sincerely,

      Antonios

This is non-ethical thing. If you can sale through right way you will not be able to sale through wrong way. So try finding some ethical solutions instead of using porn pix to promote your products. Another issue here is child protection laws. Obviously porn will going to unlawful act if some person younger than 18 will open that. So try avoiding it.

Porn will always sell. It always has and it always will.

The trick is to give them something they can't get for free. The reason why the cookie cutter video membership site is near dead is because you now have all that content being distributed free of charge.

The niche sites still make a killing though. Dating, even more.

As long as you are giving them what they want and providing a good service to your visitor, I think it's just as ethical as anything else. Just don't scam people.

Where is the ethical problem here? Some may have moral issues with porn, but where are the ethical concerns?

From what I see, the OP wants to use free porn to bring in the traffic to promote affiliate offers that are related to porn.

      So what's the problem?

How is that different from giving away a free report on acne problems or blogging about acne problems in order to promote affiliate offers for acne products?

Good point. It's exactly the same thing. Like you said, people may have their own issues with adult materials but as far as ethics in marketing goes, as long as the op isn't scamming people and is providing a good product and good service to his customers, I don't see a problem with it.

Actually using porn also has a huge legal risk. Unless you're complying with 18 USC § 2257(f)(4), and associated regulations, your little advertising adventure could net you up to 5 years in prison.

    Here is the statute:

United States Code: Title 18,2257. Record keeping requirements | LII / Legal Information Institute

At the risk of appearing to know too much about this subject. Only the actual video producers (the guys who claim to own the copyright on the video) need comply with 2257. Affiliates and third party distributors need not worry.

You are dead wrong so pay very close attention:

Over the years my law office has consulted with the US Dept of Justice, sued hundreds of porn websites, and obtained court injunctions and judgments because of that mistake.

Not just porn websites, but video stores as well.

        Here is the law:

Porn producers must obtain the information necessary to show that minors are not involved.

There must be a custodian of records who keeps this information.

Now I want you to read 2257(f)(4):

It is unlawful for ANYONE (not just the producer) to distribute the sexually explicit material without a statement identifying the custodian of records and where they are kept.

So if you are using a sexually explicit image to draw traffic for your affiliate link, you had better be complying with this disclosure requirement.

This disclosure is the enforcement mechanism for preventing child porn, so the penalties are unbelievably severe.

This is incorrect. 2257 includes provisions for "secondary producers", which are defined as anyone who posts an image.

      Agree!

I used to pull in some nice cash promoting AMAKings (I know, I know! I didn't know until later about their stolen content and all that jazz). But, snikes, has the bottom fallen out on the industry. After my conversions dropped (even my recurring), I started doing the webcam stuff.

...LOTS and LOTS of money left to be made there. It was fun, but I couldn't handle the mental image of a fat, balding guy taking care of "things" while on the other end of the camera. *cringe*

Hey Man! I don't know what kind of traffic you anticipate from people interested in a subject that generally seems to attract pretty self-obsessed characters. I'm not saying that you shouldn't do it, but won't they be a bit too pre-occupied to take much notice of your offering. It might be better better to let "sleeping" dogs lie, if you get my drift.

Yes, this is a very popular niche and probably will be for some time to come. I'm myself am a partner in one such site, but I live in Vegas so go figure.

The porn industry operates on a whole different platform than what IM does. Yes, in some respects similar but none the less still different such as there own payment processors, because paypal isn't allowed.

The most popular avenues for beginners are TGP's (Thumbnail Gallery Post), LL (Link List), Top Sites, Top Galleries, etc. There are also your FREE host which will take a good size of your header and footer for their own advertisement but for newbies it can still work if you're creative. That's no different in IM either. Creativity will win out everytime no matter how competitive the market is.

I started out myself as a porn affiliate, adult webmaster if you prefer, back in 1996 and truthfully it was a great learning experience.

Think about it for a minute. There is SO MUCH FREE porn out there to be had if you can figure out how to convert porn traffic them brother, let me tell you, IM traffic should absolutely be NO PROBLEM.

Despite claims otherwise, I'm sure it could work.

My question to you is this though, we start all niche marketing by determining the feasibility. Is there really enough profit combined with low competition in it? I'm sure you could find something but it sounds like it would be tougher in porn as it's extremely oversaturated with a high percentage of non-paying customers aka filthy downloaders like ourselves. If you can make it work, more power to you.

    Are you selling porn?

If you aren't selling porn don't do it since it's false advertising, something that most people despise.

If you are selling porn feel free. Not my type of gig but to each their own.

I wouldn't be making the site for the porn, per se; I'd just be using the porn to draw traffic and sell products; products related to the porn, btw. I don't even think I'd be charging for the porn, anyway.

Anyway, let me know what you think. Terrible idea or is it doable?

The web based game Evony used soft porn in a year and a half long marketing campaign and they swelled the number of players immensely, I think it took them from around 1 million to 11 million players. So, if done right, porn can sell any product.

You don't want to use Porn to attract visitors unless you want to fully invest yourself in that niche. Don't mix Porn with straight intentions. There is nothing wrong in advertising a product with a beautiful woman beside it, but you clearly stated "Porn". Don't go that route.
