A Public and Open Apology to NCmedia

I dropped a line of humor into my general response, and in doing so, the post seemed to suggest something that was never intended.

The "merry Russians" was an attempt at fun humor.

The following line was about the person who was the subject of the thread.

Because I dropped a line of humor, my intended message was derailed.

NCmedia: I apologize to you for breaking my post and making it look like I was smearing you, because that was never my intent.

When I find myself wrong, I admit it.

I could not figure out the disconnect in your last response, so I reread the thread and see the problem now.

When you quoted me in #46, you showed:

Only when that was done, I would come to start a thread of this type to see if I could ferret out the people like NCmedia and his band of merry Russians. LOL

Guys like that should be working at McDonald's for a living, flipping burgers. And I would seek to help him find that direction in his life.
I see now that you thought the McDonald's comment was about you... It never was... It was about the person who was the subject of the thread...

I apologize for what seemed to be a direct slam against you, because I never intended it to be seen as a comment about you.

Bill

Wow... I have no idea what this is about but it's clearly big of Bill Platt. I don't know Bill, but he's impressed me with this and if we ever cross paths, that will be reflected.

It takes character to do something like this, and character is the one thing money can't buy.

No, I got tired of Reba a while ago. I wish Guiding Light was still on. I'd watch the hell out of that show.

Ohhhh, I don't think "hammered" even begins to describe my state on new years.

Evidently, I drunk-dialed Caleb five times to sing Lady Gaga for him.

Which really ended up being more like incoherently gibbering and drooling at my Skype, rather than actual singing.

But hey! I'm Scots-Irish. That's what we do.

It's actually George's chat. George banned Caliban after a bottle of something, and then Caliban had already had 2 glasses of wine and absensecense or something.

And yeah... well caliban called me and told me how much he loves me via a song.

You're the one raiding my trash! You leave those bottles alone! They died a happy death as I consumed the fire water inside them! Let them have their peace!

True, but alchohol content is much less important than herbal content and blend, and without Grand Wormwood it's not really absinthe (Pernod Fils makes a non-wormwood absinthe, and many varieties only incorporate Roman Wormwood).

The three varieties of absinthe I've got in the house at the moment are Le Tourment Vert, which is 50% (100 proof); Pernod Fils Aux Plantes D'Absinthe Superieure, which is 68% (136 proof); and Pacifique Absinthe Verte Superieure, which is 62% (124 proof).

The Pacifique is undoubtedly the best, and as luck would have it this particular brand is distilled and bottled about an hour's drive from my house. I'm told that what I want to try next is Jade Liqueurs Nouvelle Orleans, but it's $120 a bottle so I'm not in too much of a hurry.

I became quite interested in absinthe after watching Anthony Bourdain extol its hallucinogenic properties on an episode of No Reservations several years ago. Do you specially select the ones with high thujone content (which is believed to be the primary agent that causes the hallucinations), or do you also use other criteria in choosing absinthe?

            Absinthe has no hallucinogenic properties.

Thujone, the poisonous compound in Grand Wormwood that makes you drop dead if you eat too much of it and crap your brains out if you eat even a little, is chemically related to THC.

Of course, hydrogen peroxide is chemically related to water, too... but that doesn't mean you should go drink some.

The reality is that there isn't much thujone in absinthe at all. The way absinthe is classically distilled, most of it stays in the wormwood, and there's no wormwood in the bottom of the bottle.

But the justification for banning it in the U.S. was that there was X amount of thujone in the wormwood and it wasn't clear how much of that ended up in the absinthe, but it's a deadly poison related to marijuana so we must do something!

And therefore we banned all liquor containing more than a certain amount of thujone, which you could only normally find in absinthe anyway.

There's only one problem: absinthe never contained that much thujone. So the law didn't change. We just figured out that the law didn't even apply to absinthe in the first place.

Do you specially select the ones with high thujone content
Absinthe with a high thujone content is produced by brewing what they call macerated absinthe.

Macerated absinthe is basically cheap vodka with crushed herbs soaked in it. And yes, macerated absinthe can give you hallucinations. So will arsenic. So will strychnine. In fact, just about any deadly neurotoxic agent will give you hallucinations if you take a nonlethal dose of it.

So you can probably guess my position on high-thujone absinthe. Number one, it's not really absinthe. Number two, it's a stupid idea.

The only reason they produce it is because idiots walk around saying it's the thujone content that makes absinthe good, and that absinthe gives you hallucinations.

Proper absinthe turns on the dream centres of your brain while you're awake. It's like lucid dreaming while conscious, but you don't actually hallucinate. It just makes things less-real, but in a way that opens up a lot of imagination and creativity. You may think things are there, but you don't really see them or hear them.

It's similar to paranoia, in the worst instances. I had an experience once where I was convinced horrible deformed children with sharp teeth were crawling around my floor. I couldn't see them... but I was just sure they were there. Absolutely terrifying. And positively delightful, in retrospect, but you need to be a certain kind of person to enjoy such things.

There's a reason a lot of poets and painters loved absinthe. Of course, there's a reason the heaviest users went mad, too.

Well, your description of the effects of absinthe would certainly qualify as hallucinations, if you go by the medical definition of it. I'd certainly call that a false or distorted sense of reality.

It's no more a hallucination than the way women get thinner, younger, and better-looking after you've had enough beers.

This is true, but I don't think just drinking beer or wine alone is going to give you that terrifying experience of feeling/sensing that there are non-existent mutant children with giant, sharp teeth crawling around on your floor.

And drinking absinthe is probably not going to lead to a vomit fight in the back of a taxicab, either.

Look at people who drink Scotch. They don't do the same things beer drinkers do. They don't do the same thing wine drinkers do. Nobody does the same thing Jagermeister drinkers do, it's like bottled crazy or something.

Same with absinthe. It has its own special brand of intoxication... but it's no more extreme than any other liquor.
