Is it possible for just one part of a server to be down?

Hey,

I'm on shared hosting. One website is down, one website is up. Is it possible for one website to be down and not the other, or did I do something wrong?

I imagine it's possible, but I honestly have no idea. There may be some sort of problem causing only one site to mess up while the other is fine. Maybe some data loss or something.

What do you mean by "website," and what do you mean by "down," first of all?

.htaccess would be a common answer for the content of your post.
Let's take a quick look at the title of your post:

        "Yes" =
Your web server could be up with the databases crashed >> Now a .html page will work, but any site using a db will be down.

        • If your nameservers, host providers' network connection, ect. are messed up then your site is also "down".
        • Many web hosts can "honestly" claim 99.98% 'server up-time', but your site may have still been down several times.

If you are inside a share hosting company, your websites can be in different IP addreses, and different home folders.

If you have one Hosting Account with several sites in there and one site is up and the other is down. It is most likely your site has something wrong.

On the other hand if you have several sites on the same company with different accounts or Control Panels, yes it is possible that one site is down and the other don't. Different IP Addresses and different Home Folders can affect the down issue.
