How to add a twitter direct follow button to website?

I have a Facebook page button on my site and they can like the page directly from the site. I want to have a twitter follow button as well that acts the same way. Not when you click on the follow me button it opens up my twitter page, but they push it and they are then following you....

I don't believe it is possible. I think Twitter like to make people go to their site before they can follow someone. I would personally put more of your effort into the Facebook side of things anyway. Twitter is dying a slow death. I actually read somewhere the other day that something ridiculous like 80-90% of people who sign up to Twitter are no longer using it a month later.

I would have a fair guess that majority of people who are using Twitter are using Facebook as well. And Facebook is a much more user friendly and effective sharing platform than Twitter ever was or ever will be.

Cool, thanks Will. Although I have a larger following on Twitter than I do on Facebook, for now. I will still use Twitter because its a high traffic website, my followers are people who stay on twitter anyway. Your right, there is no way to do it but thats ok, not that big of a deal.

        The buttons on Twitter
will open your twitter page and they have to click on follow.

I am sure that you could use the api to do what you want but it would require that the user be logged into twitter with the universal login sharing.

It is possible, but you may need some expert html knowledge. I recommend outsourcing that part, to save you precious energy..

I don't think you guys understand. If you go to twitter.com and look at the very bottom and click on Resources --> Follow button. Then you create it. I'm telling you....put the button on your site and a user can click it to follow your account right from your site! If they are already logged into Twitter then it will follow right away without going to twitter.com or anything, the button will just change from "follow" to "following"(with a check mark next to it). If they are not logged in then it opens up a little box from inside your site so they can log in. Its not a 3rd party app. Its from Twitter itself. No need to know html or anything lol. Have fun.
