What 95% of you aren't doing, and why you're going to fail

I've been looking around this forum, and I'm noticing a pretty big trend. Those of you who are having trouble with your niche seem to be focused on selling themselves, and their knowledge, and how they can teach you to do whatever.

These are training methods, and these are theoretical. Now don't get me wrong, theoretical solutions are great. In fact they're needed. But in the world of Internet Marketing, theory isn't going to get the bills paid.

It is not cost effective to suggest a theory. We must provide a SOLUTION. This is where some of you seem to be having a problem. When people are looking to buy a product online, they are looking to find a solution that's fast. That's tangible. That will work right now. It is our job as internet marketers to provide a solution that is so simple, so targeted to a person's immediate need, that they can't even fathom not buying it. It's about finding the right product for the right situation. Effective marketing is about distress, or filling a void, and doing it as fast as possible without having to learn anything.

Let's use an example.

Joe just started a family, and his apartment is getting to be too small. Joe wants to build a house. Joe has two options. He can spend years learning the carpentry trade, and build the house himself. It'll be cheaper in the end, but it will mean a stressful family experience because they will have to live in the apartment longer.

Or Joe can hire a contractor to do the work for him. It's more expensive, but it will allow Joe to leave his apartment much sooner, lowering stress levels.

9 times out of 10, Joe is going to pick the contractor. People just don't have the time or patience to really learn a new skill. The contractor eliminates Joe's distress, and he does it fast. That's why the contractor can charge a premium for his services.

So in short, we need to be offering tangible solutions. We need to sell our solutions, not ourselves. No one cares how smart we are or how much money we make. They care about how they can get the most benefit for the least effort.

I hope this helps. Happy New Year fellow Warriors. Keep fighting the fight.

The mistake you make is common. You've set up an either/or where one need not exist when you say:

We need to sell our solutions, not ourselves.
Selling both in the IM niche is devastatingly effective, in fact. So, I don't disagree with many of your points, but I do disagree that it's so cut-and-dried. There are many ways to carve out a successful business as a marketer without being so black-and-white about these ideas.

So when you start out with this:

Those of you who are having trouble with your niche seem to be focused on selling themselves, and their knowledge, and how they can teach you to do whatever.
you're ignoring or not understanding that in this niche (IM) and the broader MMO niche, it's often very effective and legitimate to sell not only solutions, but yourself. I'm not talking about a cult of personality, although many famous IM'ers have developed that very thing. I'm just talking about how relationships matter in this business. They matter a lot sometimes. It's a people business as much as anything else. Not always, but also not never.

      John,

I don't disagree with you, but someone brand new to IM can't exactly sell themselves if they have no track record. The point of my post is for people to focus on solving a problem FIRST. Then they can sell themselves after they've gained credibility.

Well, here is my experience. I was a software engineer. My salary was cut from $65,000 to $55,000, then $40,000. Finally, a person in India is doing my job now. He makes $200 /month and works until midnight every day to earn his pay. Do you think you can live on 5% of your pay?

It's about do what you are taught and do it stop spining your wheels and looking for the next big or easier way to do things. That's my problem is instead of doing the things I know I need to do I am always looking for a better or easier way. So this year I plan on doing my own building instead of digging just a big hole and sitting in it. I don't know about all of you guys but I'm tired of my family and friends rolling there eyes at me when I tell them I am going to be making more money soon. I just need to make it happen and show them all the way to the bank.

I dont disagree with you. We are here to offer our services. you know all of us cannot be master of everything. So we have to take help of others in our daily life. That is why the person giving us services will charge a premium on it. it is best to give him premium instead of learning everything. as master of everything is master of nothing.

Where do you guys come up with these numbers- 95%. Someone else says 99%. Why pass on opinions as if they are valid research findings?

It's a ballpark figure, but honestly, why are you focusing on that. Focus on the message.
