Ummmm...manual submissions? I hardly ever do that...For a new site, I post 1 article to each of these directories/websites:

- ezinearticles.com
- hubpages.com
- squidoo.com
- ehow.com (don't care if they are no follow or whatever)
- infobarrel.com
- associatedcontent.com

That's it... I then get links to those links I created in those directories. That will get the PR of those pages higher, thus, high PR links to my money site.

I get links with UAW submissions to blog networks and directories...it works if you constantly send out links over time.

I agree. I wouldn't put eHow up there. (One part because of their ethics--or lack of--the other part because they cut off all their residual writers. You have to submit their now by applying to Demand Studios). They do, I believe, still have some sort of residual arrangement through there, as well, however, past deeds keep me away from them.

Why put the articles on article directories? Why post them on blog networks when they are constantly loosing the front page position (which means you have to keep posting new ones all the time)

Why not buy some domains with good pagerank and put your articles on the homepage of these sites?

I don't put them on my own site generally. I syndicate them to websites whose audiences I would like to have visit my website.

In some cases I am actually able to reach one-quarter million or half a million potential people that I am not seeing on my sites anyway.

I love putting my articles -- not in article directories, but on authority websites -- and letting those sites feed some of their huge audience to my site.

In my world, SEO is secondary. It is all about the audience, and if I happen to get some SEO in the process, then that much better.

Putting it on my site alone, I could plausibly get seen by 20k people per month. But getting an article into an authority website could help me explode that traffic in surges.

And more beautifully, those surges of traffic that I see lead to people becoming followers who come back to my site on their own at later times.

To each his own, but I prefer my model of article marketing than yours.

So do I.

That's not what I'm using article directories for.

I want my articles on authority websites, or at least the best, most context-relevant sites I can reach, and that's how I get them there, by using article directories.

Whether you use article directories or not, it's obviously sensible to put it on your own site first and have it indexed there - nobody's disputing that. (Nobody who's making a living from it, anyway).

Find a list of existing article directories and test em like the rest of us do.

No one person will have the definitive list of "The Only Article Directories Worth Submitting"...

Of course, there are many pretenders, and those who are wise, will avoid their myopic viewpoint if noticed.

What it boils down to is that an article directory should provide you one of three benefits:

1. Article Syndication to other sites;

2. Readers who click-through to the links in your resource box; or

3. Credit for another inbound link to your website, in the eyes of the search engines.

In the absence of all three, a particular article directory is worthless to you.

But that does not necessarily mean that article directory is worthless to everyone.

Different article directories tend to have unique audiences. So which person is best in your target market, and which article directory do they use?

There is no one right answer for everyone. There is only the right answer for you and your audience.

So test em, and figure out which ones are best for you and your business, and leave the pretenders and the fakers to their myopic view of the world.... Just don't let them take away your real potential.

  Just as there is no definitive list of "best" directories, there is no definitive "best" way to use article marketing. There are many ways and all can be good.
  
  For SEO, for raw traffic, for links, or for all three. The key is to be sure whatever effort you put in is correlated with your goal. If links, blast away and then be sure they get indexed/pinged. Traffic - then shoot for higher ranking sites like ezine and such to snag click-thru's.
  
  Regardless, article marketing strategies can be very effective in your web business.

I don't submit to any article sites and do just fine. I prefer uniquely placed articles on non-syndication sites.

I always post to my own website first, then rewrite the title, first and last paragraph and submit to ezine, goarticles, articledashboard and squidoo.

IMO articles are fine for backlinks, I get little actual traffic from them but the ranking of the main sites seems to improve quickly . Don't forget to grab your author RSS feed from each of the sites and submit that to the aggregators.

There are some great lists in here if you have tons of time to submit to these directories.

I personally only use three, EZA, Go articles, and Articles Dashboard. But at least half the time I submit to EZA only. For some niche sites I have been able to syndicate articles across several sites in only a matter of days. (creating backlinks AND traffic).

Like TPW and Alexa have pointed out . . syndication is the key to effectively capitalizing on article marketing (in my opinion).

Depends on what your looking for....each have their own set of audience. Some rank better for certain keywords, while others drive more traffic.

You are not penalized for submitting to more than 5, 10, 30 article directories. It all depends on how much time you have to invest in this task.

Remember to look for directories that have a quick turn around time.

What overall difference does it make to your business if they have a slower turnaround time?

I ask because I do best of all, by far, with the article directory widely considered to have the slowest turnaround time of all the major directories. The ones with a slower turnaround time have may have higher overall editorial standards, which usually significantly increases their value to me as an article marketer and (among other things) makes it more likely that my work will be syndicated from them, bringing me in further context-relevant backlinks, targeted traffic, opt-ins and sales as my business develops.

So, overall, as long as someone's minding the store and they do actually get published, I actually tend to prefer directories with a slower turnaround time.

  I do a lot of article marketing and hope I can help. The first thing I HIGHLY recommend is that you have Google Analytics inserted on every page of your blog/website/squeeze pages, etc.
  
  Why? Because GA will tell you where the incoming traffic came from. That way, after a couple of weeks of your articles being online, you can see which directories are sending you the most/best traffic.
  
  That being said, I like EzineArticles and GoArticles, which Google seems to like as well.
  
  If you are looking for a way to make money from your articles, please read my article "Paid to Write." It explains how to benefit from article links, as well as how to earn cash from any articles you post.
  
  (Click on the "Paid to Write - 3 Key Article Marketing Strategies" in my signature)
  
  Squidoo lenses and Hubpages are also valuable sites to post your articles. Hubpages has more restrictions than Squidoo, so you may want to start with Squidoo.
  
  Another thing that is important: EVERY TIME YOU POST AN ARTICLE or A COMMENT on someone's blog - PING IT!
  
  This is a very easy way to alert the search engines that you have a new link coming into your site.
  
  I like pingoat dot com because their pinging service is free.

Well there you go. You got some amazing resources recommending to you above.

One other suggestion I'd have for you is joining a blog network (like 1WayLinks, etc). Not really to get your article redistributed...but more for the backlinks. You can post your article on a few hundred separate blogs, get good backlinks to your own site, & rise up the rankings.

But if you just want good article directories, well, you got a ton of suggestions above. Use em!
