Bill, you're so right that consistency is key. I may not have thousands of visitors each day to my website yet, but I'm committed to posting new stuff there at least three times a week. And my products may not be blockbusters yet, but I create new ones regularly and promote them to my list.

A lot of people are overwhelmed and even discouraged by the number of people involved in internet marketing. But the drop-out rate, I find, is phenomenal...and folks drop out a lot faster than you'd imagine.

Bill, this is something I have always been a little too careful over the years especially in my music career. I am so concerned with spamming people that I don't connect with them enough, thus hurting my potential.

On top of "leaving a trail" it actually builds you a micro-celebrity status.

If people see you everywhere they look, they'll start to think you're well known and worth listening too.

A good friend of mine, Colin Theroit, said it best. "Celebrity is just having your picture taken a lot."

I like that too! Paris Hilton comes to mind, lol.

I also agree with promoting your business without spamming wherever you go. Be proud about what you do and share it with others. I think when you really enjoy what you do that comes naturally too.

True, but is it for everyone?
Does that apply to IMers who are not promoting themselves as any kind of guru?
I mean does it help in building authority when all I have are blog/s for women 40+ about issues like menopause or divorce where I'm not establishing myself as an expert? Instead i'm trying to talk to them as one of them?

Nice Post! Man...I'm spitting out 5-6 articles per day. That's about 1800 per year. I also ping everything from articles to comments, profiles, EVERYTHING. Something your backlinks don't get counted because the spiders can't find them. So ping it all..

  There are places to hang out online for many markets and niches. it is a nice idea to find them and post in them. Or make yourself a little publicity network of microblogs and use them.

Good post - I try to leave a trail on blogs and forums - but it is really helpful to look specifically for dofollow blogs/forums so your links will backlink properly

I have to agree. Content is king but mass link propagation is what the kingdom thrives on. This is why seNuke and xrumer etc are so important. To be able to get your site / product seen in the now almost beyond the imagining numbers of sites out there seo is tough, adwords is tough, and most of the other more common methods of IM are being ruled by big players - but why are they ruling the niches ??

Because they don't just make one ad, or one site - they make HUNDREDS

Everything we do has to be bulk in volume and enmasse just to be noticed. If you don't do that then its a case of big dog eats little dog

You know, that's actually are pretty cool way to put it. "Leave a trail"

There's several places where I'd rather remain unknown (usually around places where friends/family would see me) so I can have some privacy, but other than that... yeah! Let yourself be known & make it easy for people to find what you have to say & promote.

This is excellent advice, and it has the effect of building authority status and casting a "halo effect" on the products and services you offer IF you provide credible, solid content.

Also, I'd say to be open to other opportunities to raise your target market's awareness of you, such as JVs, attending/speaking at offline IM events, and doing interviews. Every little bit helps, so just be open to such opportunities if and when they arise.

Great tip thanks for sharing it, I am currently trying to leave a paper or pdf trail with free reports, I know that viral marketing can explode overnight, but it's taking slightly longer than that for me, but promising results so far so I am sticking at it.

Great advice, this is exactly what newbies should do to the letter. If you can even spend 1-2 hours daily dedicating yourself to a simple plan, you'll make headway.

I certainly agree. You should be branding you, and gaining expertise in a few specific areas. I'm finding that linking my blogs to twitter, FB, and others is helping in other ways too, such as adsense.

Yes, leaving a trail is important, but you need to build a good reputation, too. Spamming can work against you, so don't even think about it. Give something of value when you leave your trail and people are likely to remember you. Build your brand in such a way that when people think of excellence, trustworthiness and credibility, they will have your name or your brand in mind.
