Platform to monetize a hobby

Hi,

What kind of software\platform\etc... could I use to set up and monetize a photoblog?

I am a computer graphics hobbyist. My idea is to set up a web gallery (basically a photoblog), invite other hobbyists to create their own galleries, then monetize the site with advertisements and affiliate links.

I could combine something like Gallery 2 with WordPress or Joomla. And, given the security issues, I am completely open to suggestion.
