I created my first list-building blog with a strange feature:

No Opt-in necessary.

Now, many of you would understand why I thought that would be better in the long run. For others, here's why:
-------------------------------------------------------------
1.Forced opt-in would only get me a list with most members not interested in what I would have to say later, since the subscription would be like a one-time pass for getting a few freebies.

2.Instead of a 1000+ non-responsive list, I would on any given day of the week prefer a 100 member responsive list.
-------------------------------------------------------------

As the first week comes close to its end, I have only 8 Email Subscribers with the successive days getting me:
Day---- Subscribers--- Pageviews--- Visitors
1 -------- 3------------- 20----------- 7
2 -------- 3------------- 132--------- 41
3 -------- 1------------- 59---------- 20
4 -------- 0------------- 34---------- 11
5 -------- 1------------- 53---------- 19
6 -------- 0------------- 58---------- 14
7(so far) - 0------------- 40----------- 8

While I have made a few modifications to the site layout, I don't think it could have become so different as to drive away potential subscribers.

***One point to note is that 90% of the visitors were from Warrior Forum.

Please take a look at the site and point out the changes I need to make:

How do you know most members won't be interested in what you have to say later on, via the email series? Can you read their minds or predict their habbits or predict the future?

I have always collected, with the option to unsubscribe, but i proviide so much hot content, that people purchase products of mine after 6, 10, 15 or even 20 emails. They don't seem to interesting at first but as they receive content emails 1-6 (no promotions), they get warmed up, and in can be persuaded to buy. (This depends on the writing style of your emails).

I would collect the optin, and have a stronger sales copy on your page.

    Tips for your squeeze page:
Change the headline font, and colour perhaps.
Add more wording, it lacks words.
Include some bullet benifits to what people can get in the report (see mine for examples).

I like the 2 blue arrows though.

Agreed. I made this awful assumption when I first started in IM as well.

      So what do you suggest?

1.Make subscription necessary for all freebies.

2.Offer say 2 or 3 before subscription and the rest afterwards.

2.Offer say 2 or 3 before subscription and the rest afterwards.

        offer 2 or 3 what?

Offer the report after subscribing, say somthing like "read your report within 2 mins"

Then send some emails in your autoresponder, not making all of them promotion emails but info emails too.

2 or 3 freebies as samples of what to expect on subscription.

            I would spread them out,

but not offer too many freebies even if spreaded out. As your list might expect freebies everytime you send somthing out, so will be expecting your items to be free, and some might not feel like paying for your paid promotions.

Well actually I have modeled the site and list around freebies with occasional paid products.

In that case what do you suggest?

Then leave it/try it as you have, carry on with your model and see how it performs.

After testing and seeing the results you can see if you need to tweak your model.

Based on your inputs, I think I should go for A/B/.. testing until I find the right thing.

Can you recommend a free script I can use to divide the traffic between multiple sites?

Or should I just make multiple sites and promote them separately?

                Wow, is that backwards.

It would be advisable to try to start switching your theory to being:

                Offer high quality content regularly.
Offer excellent paid product occasionally, every few emails is fine.
Surprise them with freebies here and there.

Yes I'm going to use your model alongside the current one.

I guess one major problem with mine is the limit on possible freebies unless I break them up into small parts in a series.

But again creating regular content would require a lot of time. Right?

With content you can create it all at once (with a ghost writer if you want) and start spreading it and setting it up on your autoresponder, ready for your readers to read.

Rather than creating content every week, you can do it all at the start, and then deliver it. You should plan your content and what to include though, and make sure it is what your customers would be interested in.

    Hello,

I looked at your page and I must say it doesn't say a whole lot. I'd suggest maybe adding a little more content to tell the user more about what exactly they are getting, who you are, and maybe show examples of how you used your own SEO tools/tips to help your sites rank better, and if you can try to get some reviews to put on your site. This might increase your conversion.

You get better yourself at turning freebie takers into buyers when you build a list of them. I think that challenge is actually a good thing for most marketers. But yes, test it for sure. And move prospects onto a buyers list so you can keep track of who's who and avoid sending the same offers to people who've already bought it. That will keep your unsub rate lower.

      Yes definitely!
I'll maintain an excel sheet with all email #s sent to each list member.

Keep refining the list with every 5th email or so based on the click-through rate, while keeping the non-responsive members on another list.

      Thanks a lot.

Yes I've made up my mind about that already!

I'm going to make subscription mandatory, leaving the current no-opt-in Freebies untouched.

My two cents though - no offense, but the colors are really "in your face" and hard to read.

Oh come on! How could that possibly be offensive when I'm asking for it :p

Thanks for the input. I always knew yellow was too bright. But I wanted it to be un-dark. What colors do you suggest?

Well, the light blue of the freebies available for download doesn't have enough contrast IMHO. It's hard to read against the background - perhaps a darker blue to increase the contrast?

The ebook cover you have is kinda rough around the edges too. The colors especially - they just seem really overly bright.

Send me a PM if you want, I'll do a free ecover for you.

At first glance, I would rearrange the order of your site. Make it a little more organized so that visitors are seeing everything you want them to see in the order which you want them to see. For example: They see SEOFreebies --> then they see your free report picture --> then they see your "pitch (subscribe and get 3 bonus ebooks) ---> then put link to "what people are saying about it" ---> then they see the email subscribe form ---> then put your "other" freebies.

and since your site is called SEO Freebies, if I subscribed, I would expect mostly freebie stuff and rarely would purchase from you unless you over deliver on the product you promote.

What I would do is, on your site, post a video explaining your freebie, then put a comment box underneath and tell the visitors to comment below on how this freebie may help your business and you'll send them the freebie via email. Tell them that by commenting they will be opted in so they can receive the freebie in their inbox. You might need to buy a premium plugin for this if you want it push button easy, or use plugin such as "Subscribe by comment" wordpress plugin and configure it to do so.

If you really want to skyrocket your list building, you should buy a domain name, instead of using free blog sites.

But possibilities are endless so, take these into account and slap your taste to it!

    Keep on keeping on!

      Thanks Yoichi!

I'm definitely going to re-order the elements, and in the order you advised.

I have several domain names with blogs on them, but I'm a total noob as far as list-based IM is concerned, so don't want to dive into it right away. I'm trying to build a list of people who want to learn SEO, not necessarily to sell paid products, but to develop a list who would respond to my suggestions, such as checking out other freebies, blogs and websites.

However, when I do go for hard-core IM, I'll keep your advice in mind.

    Some suggestions for your site:
    1. A much better headline which gets the visitor excited (Capturing attention)
    2. The benefits that the visitor will get (WHat's in it for the visitor)
    3. then the opt-in box.

Use a plain white background. As part of my research, it works way better that way!
