can you store photos on amazon s3 and is it advisable to link directly to them from your site or have photos on your regular webhost and just use Amazon S3 for audio and videos?

Also does S3 store all types of video formats?

I believe s3 can store any type of file.

I would probably not bother for photos (because they should be optimized to be small in the first place).

But for video certainly. And audio that gets a lot of play.

The only downside is it can be a pain to deal with it because the link is different, but if you are coding it wouldnt matter anyway (like it might not work well for the wysiwyg crowd).

Yes, you can store any type of file on Amazon S3 be it a photo, audio, video, pdf, word document, whatever. It is afterall, just an alternative storage solution to your server. The main reason people use S3, including myself, is to take a large strain off our servers. If you have a lot of visitors to your site accessing a lot of files like videos, photos, etc, then hosting those files on S3 will reduce the load on your server tremendously. This means you can have a lot more people viewing your website at the same time before your server will crash.

The more of your website content you place on S3 the more efficient your server will run. I like to put all my css and images from my website, as well as all the bigger video and download files. So basically everything except for the actual html file itself.
