Buying someones domain name, how do I transfer?

Warriors, I'm in negotiation for a nice domain and I think I will be able to get it. Can someone please explain the steps I need to make so this process goes smoothly as far as payment and transfer of the name?

Any advice, tips, or steps would be greatly appreciated. I've never bought a domain directly from someone before and I just want to be safe. This purchase is in the low 4-figures.

Thanks!

You will want to use a service such as Escrow which will be the middle man with the money. The domain owner will need to initiate the transfer from his registar.

I understand the money part with Escrow, but how does he initiate the transfer with his registrar? I use Namecheap and want to add the domain there. What will he need from me?

I think at Namecheap I can actually initiate it.

Do you know who the registrar is? Either you or he can initiate the transfer if it is not Namecheap. The simplest way for you to get possession of the domain immediately is to create an account at the registrar that it is registered at. Then the seller just pushes the domain to you. No hassle, no waiting for a transfer. You will then have to wait 60 days before you can transfer it out of that registrar, but after 60 days, you can then transfer it to Namecheap.

I would do the transaction via escrow.com for that kind of money. Much safer than just giving someone the money and hoping that they transfer the domain.

I've used escrow.com when dealing in x,xxx for domains. You pay a slight fee for the service but peace of mind is worth it to me.

If he uses Namecheap, then everything is made easier.

What's the name of his registrar?

If the biggest concern is just to get the domain in your hands as quickly as possible, it's often easiest to just get an account where the domain is already.

Then once you have control of it transfer it to another account you own elsewhere if you choose and have access to support for that domain if an issue arises during transfer.

I've used Sedo.com escrow service and it's ridiculously easy. You push the domain name to their account at the same registrar and they take care of everything from there. Easy as pie.
