GoDaddy "Wiggle Room" Gone

Use to be that if you had a domain expire because you didn't pay on time or there was a problem with your credit card or whatever, you still had full functionality of the site for a period of time - something like 2-3 weeks. This wiggle room gave you time to pay, change your credit card on file, or whatever and still be able to use your site as normal.

Yesterday this happened to me because of a card expiration problem except that immediately a parked domain sign went over my domain name.

Not too good especially when you are accustomed to the wiggle room.

However it's probably better long term because some of us rely too much on wiggle room, in various forms, instead of being proactive and making sure things don't slip through the cracks.

I think that might be a new thing for them. I noticed a couple sites I visited over the past 2 months or so had that notice. When I looked it up the domain had just expired the day before. Very frustrating indeed!

Thanks for the input. I'm talking only about domain names. It's normally not smart to have your domain name tied in too closely with the place you host.

I personally don't see a problem with the quality or price of their domain names. Other stuff maybe so.

If you need good hosting, I can recommend HostGator.

That's why I have my domains set to auto-renew. If I decide I don't want one anymore and I plan on letting it expire, I turn off the auto-renew on it and let it go.

I thought immediate dissablement was pretty standard, hopefully you still have a grace period to renew at no additional charge.
As long as you register with an email address you actually check, it seems hard to overlook the several warnings they send before hand.

That's why you need to have an alert system in place. When I buy domains, I set a date in my calendar for a week before they expire. When I get the notice, I can renew, or just let it slip away if the site is doing nothing
