Hey folks,

I am a very new person to Wordpress, but, I have a question. You know that on the side, you traditionally have categories, and, you also have pages/categories below the header.

Do those have to be the same?

What I am wanting to do is promote X- but, have one way to get to X under the header (one type of way of searching for X) and then on the side have another way to promote X.

Make sense?

    You lost me.

But if its wordpress, it's possible. You can put whatever you want and however you want it in the header, navigation, and sidebar.

Let's say it was an offline biz, for example.

    Say it was a cardiologist.

Well, say, on the top panel, it would have different categories of doctors, and, on the side, it would have different locations of Doctors (New York, Queens, Long Island, etc.)

Could I have each different, but, eventually point to the same doctor?

Yes you can, however you will need careful theme selection and a decent understanding of widget use.

You may wish to consider just building your own themes from the ground up. You can do that here for really cheap WPThemeBuilder : Premium Wordpress Theme Generator
      NOT an aff link.

It's possible to set pages along the top and along the side and not have to go the category route.

However you could use the category's on the side for location Example: Los Angeles when they click on that category they would see all the los Angeles listings.

      I hope that helps,

    Yes.

You can do whatever you want. But if your looking to do something like that you are most likely going to have to edit the template yourself.

Yes. Plus, a decent understanding of WP

You may wish to consider just building your own themes from the ground up.
    No, that's not necessary...

If you create categories for each location, then these can be included via the category widget (no theme modifications).
However with categories comes the risk of duplicate content etc etc etc.

Modifying a good theme is your best option in this case.

It's sounds like you're trying to put a banner under the header, in the text, and in a widget area. If so, try WP-Insert. You'll be able to insert banners directly into the templates and widget areas with ease.

Then use the new custom menus option to place the menu above the header, below the header, in the sidebar, or in all of them. The choice is yours.

Hopefully -- this answers your question.

By using a theme which utilizes Wordpress 3.0+ custom menus, and simple widgets this should be fairly simple.

I'm not going to go into details because I am a very simple Wordpress "hack around until I get it working" guy.

If you need deep details search for two things... "Istvan Horvath" he is not a "hack around" guy, but someone who knows what he is talking about. (I open my guide from Istvan several times per week.)

Secondly, the Wordpress support site is a goldmine of information.

    Jeremy,

I just wanted to add one more note, quickly..

I actually did something almost identical to what you described for the first time yesterday. It was my first time using the custom menu areas in the theme and the custom menu widget for the sidebar. I am using the Arras them which is very customizable.

I used both of the resources I mentioned above, plus the forum for my theme to uncover all my little questions which popped up.

Hey guys - I FIGGERED IT OUT (that's how they would say it in the deep south where I live!)

I was excited to be able to learn about Categories/posts/pages! I feel REALLY SMARTER!

I do have a question - I don't know if this exists or not.

I am going to be showcasing house plans on my site. I know when you search for a particular theme, you have those check boxes that allow you to search by color, etc.

Is there a way that I can set up a different page for each house plan, and, have different check boxes that would allow for various themes to be shown?

For example, if someone wanted a house plan with 3 bedrooms, 2.5 baths, with a fireplace and a 2 car garage - is there a way to be able to have like 30 different options that they could check and then the house plan that comes up is the one that they want?

    Thanks again!
