Hi Warriors,

Ok, I'll be launching my new site next week and have made a couple of blog posts and then pinging them. I'm actually new to blogging and was worried about not being able to engage my readers. So I was excited to get my first comments!

But I had to approve them by hand. How can I set my blog to just post them automatically? I can always go back and take one off if it seems to spammy or is offensive. For me, it's a matter of saving time. Manually approving every single comment is going to be a pain in the patootie!

First what cms are you using for your blog. If it is wordpress you can simply go to settings discussion and change the settings so that you do not have to approve the comments. Keep in mind though that by turning off the approve method will bring in alot of spammers on a daily basis. So you will be having to remove more comments that already went live in the first place.

Look in the discussion settings on your dash board and uncheck the "An administrator must always approve the comment " and the "Comment author must have a previously approved comment" buttons Make sure you have Askimet enabled or you will get spammed to death.

I personally think you should always mod the comments.

Enable Askimet to lessen the pain. Besides of moderation of the comments you can also opt to have your readers sign up first before they can be able to post.

    Michelle,

Just install a plugin that will automatically get rid of the blatant spam; this will let you handle only important serious comments. Here are 3 free alternatives to Akismet:

    WordPress › Anti-Captcha « WordPress Plugins
WordPress › TypePad AntiSpam for WordPress « WordPress Plugins
WP-SpamFree WordPress Spam Plugin - Powerful Anti-Spam Protection!

      Thanks so much guys!

Yes, I know I need to use an anti-spam something or other if I turn off the approve-before-posting feature. But I'm nearly ready to launch and I'm going to go into MASSIVE action to get traffic. Approving every single comment would drive me NUTS.

And thanks for the Askimet alternative. I was surprised to see they're charging for it now and I just refuse to pay it. I feel like I'm being nickeled and dimed for every little thing right now....

      P.S. Yes, I'm using WordPress.

You can also filter the comments on wordpress, for example if the comment has more than 2 links, it will have to be approved first.

I think it's better for you to moderate your comments. I'm getting nearly 10-15 spam comments eventhough Akismet have blocked many of them. So, please think twice before you do something like that.. or give a try to WP-Spamfree plugin.

      Hi Nightengale,

      Here's a thought for you.

I have a number of blogs, I use Askimet but still I get a lot of spam. I actually moderate all of these myself. Here's what I do.

First though, this isn't my idea. A well known warrior, Dogscout shed light on this for me.

I delete or report as spam most useless spam comments. However, if the blog is new and all I get is spam, I do this...

I take the spam comment and edit it. I change the name to a real name, I change the comment to something readable and relevant to my blog. I change the URL to either one of my related sites or I delete the URL altogether.

So, "buy V****a, and his crap comment and spam URL becomes, Mrs Jones, great comment and a link to my site or no link.

That way the spammer allows me to build up comments on a young blog and the spammer gets nothing but he/she has just done me a favour.

Turn the spam comments to your advantage. You'll never stop them all.

As one poster above said its good to moderate to stop spamming.
CAPTCHA is a practical way though.
